Farmers markets offer many positives

Maybe it’s just our appreciation for freshly grown produce, great music and artisan goods, but we believe area farmers markets provide a nice accent to living in this area.

One of the largest and most robust of the markets — and there are more than handful — takes place in the Marquette Commons each Saturday. In fact, the people that organize the Marquette market, the city’s Downtown Development Authority, has invited community members to its annual market preview from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, April 25.

This special event offers a first look at the upcoming market season and provides an opportunity for 100 customers to purchase market memberships and pick up membership pins ahead of opening day, which is May 16. Community members can secure their membership early with a donation of at least $105 at mqtfarmersmarket.com/market-members or purchase a membership at the Market Preview for a donation of at least $100.

For a donation of $100 or greater, you can receive a numbered market member pin (2026 year of the Radish); exclusive benefits at the market; and 15 minutes early shopping at the market each week.

All money collected through the market member program will be put directly into the farmers’ market. Membership will help with programming, placemaking and supporting vendors. In addition to membership sales, the event will feature a mix of returning and new vendors. With no vendor fee for this event, it is a great opportunity for those who have been considering the Downtown Marquette Farmers Market to try it out. Interested individuals can contact the market manager at farmersmarket@downtownmarquette.org.

And as we get further into spring, look for more information on the farmers markets near your homes. They all will offer great food, music and craft items and a wonderful opportunity to experience a sense of community.

Starting at $3.23/week.
