30 years ago NEWBERRY – Newberry contractor Howard Bawks couldn’t bear to watch local officials squabble over money while a park construction project teetered in the balance. 30 years ago MARQUETTE — Plans to build the world’s largest sauna at Marquette’s Lower Harbor Park were outlined in a FinnFest USA Committee presentation to the city commission Monday night. Television personality Carl Pellonpaa, president of the committee, provided an overview of the national celebration, which will be in Marquette next Aug. 7-11. Plans include a temporary sauna that will hold up to 500 occupants, a Finnish bonfire, a parade through downtown Marquette and a concert at Lakeview Arena. 30 years ago ISHPEMING – Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc. will close its century-old maintenance shops in Ishpeming on Dec. 31, after the company and the United Steelworkers of America failed to reach accord on a sale to a third party. A total of 65 employees, 55 hourly and ten salaried, will be affected. According to CCI President Frank S. 30 years ago NEGAUNEE – Project Newborn has been chosen as one of “Michigan’s Best!” by the Michigan Association of School Boards. The program, a collaborative effort of the Ishpeming, Negaunee, NICE, Republic-Michigamme, Powell Township and Marquette school districts, was chosen as one of nine first place winners in the K-12 grade district category from more than 230 entries. 30 years ago HANCOCK – Five residents could face disorderly conduct charges after stripping and dancing to accordion music in the early morning hours at a laundromat. Hancock police were called to the Washtub Laundromat just after 3 a.m. Saturday to investigate a call claiming a nude man was playing an accordion as a woman stripped. The responding officers found the man playing the accordion while two men in undershorts and two women in bras and underpants danced, Chief Mike Beaudoin said.
