SAULT STE. MARIE — Coast Guard Lt. Sandra Stosz is taking command of the 140-foot Great Lakes icebreaker Katmai Bay, an event she downplays. “I don’t feel it’s a fascinating thing. But if I’m a role model, I’ll do the best job I can so other women can look at me and say ‘Hey, I can do it too.” That’s all for the better,” said Stosz, 30. Three other female officers command 110-foot patrol boats, she said. Stosz, born in Ellicott City, Md., attended the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis and the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. She replaces Lt. Craig Bennett, who has been sent to the University of Washington in Seattle for post-graduate study. She was installed formally Friday.

MUNISING — Eighty-nine timber sales were made on the Munising district of the Upper Michigan National Forest in the past fiscal year, according to Floyd T. Roberts, district ranger. The estimated market value of rough products that were cut is $294,000, which furnished approximately 14,000 man-days of employment in the forest area. Local processing added several thousand more days of employment. Timber cutting plans are coordinated with wildlife interests to create openings for new growth for food and timber. Many deer feed on the succulent tops of trees during the winter months. Removal of old growth allows young, vigorous trees to develop for higher quality on the next cutting period. Receipts for the sale of forest products are returned to the U.S. Treasury with exception of 25 percent, which is returned to the counties on a pro-rated basis and another ten percent that is held for road construction and improvement. The planting program for the current year calls for 600,000 red pine and 150,000 white spruce transplants to be planted on denuded areas. It is estimated that 5,000 acres are still in need of planting to get the land into productive use.
