MARQUETTE — Shutting down a community institution is always difficult, but the owner of the Peninsula Roller Skating Rink in Marquette figures he just doesn’t have a choice. “The rink was originally profitable, but is now struggling to stay ahead,” Bill Helwig said. His rink has served roller skating enthusiasts for over 16 years, but there aren’t as many indoor skaters as there used to be.

MARQUETTE — A record summer enrollment of 1890 students was reported today by Northern Michigan University. The enrollment which reflects substantial gains in both the undergraduate and graduate programs, represents a 15.4% increase over last summer. The previous record high was 1,658 students.
