Keweenaw Heartlands Project update on April 16

ALLOUEZ - The Nature Conservancy in Michigan is holding a Keweenaw Heartlands Project update at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 16, to share the latest project developments and answer community members’ questions.

During the meeting, TNC will provide information about ongoing activities and community-based planning that will lead to the transition of the Keweenaw Heartlands forest into public ownership.

WHAT: Keweenaw Heartlands Project Update, Open to the Public

WHO: The Nature Conservancy in Michigan

WHEN: 6:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, April 16

WHERE: Allouez Township Community Center, 388 Bumbletown Road, Allouez

In 2022, TNC purchased more than 32,500 acres of forestland in Keweenaw County, known as the Keweenaw Heartlands, to protect natural and cultural features, ensure the health of the working forest, and secure permanent public access for the enjoyment of the forest and recreational opportunities.

Because TNC does not intend to own this land long-term, a broad cross-section of members from the local and regional community has contributed over 1,800 combined volunteer hours, in partnership with TNC and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, to develop a plan for the transition of this forest to public ownership, governance, and management.

Starting at $3.23/week.
