UPAWS back open for business

MARQUETTE — The Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter has announced that the shelter has reopened following its temporary closure and recovery efforts related to a canine parvovirus outbreak.

Beginning Tuesday, walk-in adoptions for dogs, cats, and small animals have resumed during regular public hours.

“We’re excited to welcome our community back,” said Ann Brownell, community outreach and volunteer coordinator at UPAWS. “Returning to walk-in adoptions allows visitors to stop in, meet our adoptable animals, and work with our staff to find the right match for their family.”

UPAWS’ current group of puppies will continue to follow a separate adoption process due to their age and special placement needs. Interested adopters should first complete an Adoption Interest Form through the UPAWS website. A member of the adoption team will then contact applicants to discuss the puppies and the next steps.

Brownell said the shelter is grateful for the community’s patience and support throughout the recovery process.

“We truly appreciate the encouragement we’ve received from our supporters,” she said. “We’re looking forward to helping more animals find loving homes and welcoming everyone back through our doors.”
