MARQUETTE– The Peter White Library Board of Trustees on Monday introduced city commissioners to an $8.5 million renovation plan that would expand the library floor space from 25,000 square feet to 60,000 square feet. Library Director Pam Christensen called the renovation proposal “very preliminary,” but she and Mayor Scott Pinkard were hopeful this morning the project could be started in two to five years. The main purpose for the expansion, Pinkard said, is to reduce the “clutter: of the current library facility and make it “more comfortable and user friendly.” The original white Bedford limestone library building facing Front Street was built in 1904. In 1958, a $300,000 addition was built onto it. The new addition would be on Ridge Street where the parking lot is located. The expansion would include a 200-seat auditorium that would provide another venue for community music and theater performances.
