MARQUETTE — The federal government will not interfere in the internal politics of Indian tribes, a U.S. attorney said Tuesday in response to a tribe’s demand for federal law enforcement. “The ongoing controversy at the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community is an intra-tribal dispute that in the first instance must be resolved by the tribe itself,” U.S. Attorney Michael Detmer said in a written response to a lawsuit filed Tuesday by the tribe.

MARQUETTE — Railroad locomotives in Marquette County will take part in a western train chorus of 18,000 whistles on July 13 as an opening salute to the second annual week. Concurrently with celebration of railroad week here, 500 other cities and towns throughout the west will hold individual celebrations of the period, which has been set aside to celebrate a year of achievement for the “iron horse.”
