Iron Ore Heritage Trail expansion strengthens Marquette County recreation
MARQUETTE — Several projects are planned along the Iron Ore Heritage Trail this summer, including an extension of over four miles in Chocolay Township that will put the trail to just over 50 miles.
The extension will improve the existing corridor from Kawbawgam Road to Lakenenland Sculpture Park with a crushed aggregate surface and a new parking area to improve access from the east end of the trail.
Additional interpretive panels are also planned in Ishpeming and near the Barnes-Hecker Mine disaster site, adding to the trail’s role as both a recreation staple to the area and a public history asset.
The work strengthens one of Upper Peninsula’s popular outdoor amenities and supports year-round recreation and tourism across the Iron Range.
