Negaunee City Band announces concert program
NEGAUNEE — Director Lucas Wickstrom has chosen to celebrate the music of Leroy Anderson during this Wednesday’s (July 15) concert to be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Outdoor Performing Arts Center at the east end of Iron Street. The concert will also feature tuba player, Chris Adams, performing “Solo Pomposo.”
The program begins with a Sousa march, “New York Hippodrome,” named after a famous old theater where Sousa’s band played their longest single engagement in 1915 and 1916.
All other numbers are by composer Leroy Anderson, such as a medley which includes “Serenata,” “The Syncopated Clock,” and “Bugler’s Holiday.” The band will also play “Sleigh Ride,” one of Anderson’s most famous pieces.
Other well known numbers include “Blue Tango,” Anderson’s 1951 hit, the first instrumental recording ever to sell one million copies. “The Typewriter” has been used often over the years for radio broadcast theme music, especially for news programs.
“Belle of the Ball” is a waltz, while “Forgotten Dreams” originally a piano work, is often used as a recurring theme. Lively numbers include “The Rakes of Mallow” from Anderson’s “Irish Suite” and “Home Stretch,” a spirited piece that captures the essence of a thrilling race to the finish.
The program’s closing number, as always, is “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.”
