U.P. Gem and Mineral Show set for Saturday

ISHPEMING — The 45th annual Upper Peninsula Gem and Mineral Show will feature demonstrations and dozens of vendors on Saturday, with the Ishpeming Rock and Mineral Club offering associated rock-collecting field trips on Friday and Sunday.

The show will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Ishpeming Elks Club, which is located at 597 Lakeshore Dr. in Ishpeming.

“Our show features about 50 different dealers from around the Great Lakes area with worldwide rocks and minerals,” said Ishpeming Rock and Mineral Club President Kirsten Maki, who is serving as event coordinator for the show. “We have several dealers who sell jewelry made with gemstones and rocks. Many (dealers) work during the shows so their are demos going on.”

Beyond the dealers and displays of gems, minerals, fossils, jewelry, the show features fun and learning opportunities for children and families, she said.

“We also have a nice children’s area. It is a family-friendly event,” she said. “Kids can start their own collection and (there’s) a scavenger hunt and an area to be able to dig for treasures with metal detectors. We will also have a food vendor.”

Friday’s field trip is to the Republic Iron Mine for mineral specimens and Sunday’s field trip is to Lindberg’s Quarry to collect kona dolomite.

For Friday’s trip, the group will be meeting at the parking lot of the former Shopko Hometown in Ishpeming along U.S. 41, about a half mile west of the roundabout, according to the group’s website at www.ishpemingrocks.org. Participants are asked to arrive between 9 and 9:30 a.m. to sign a liability waiver and make the field trip donation, which is $10 for all participants. The group will leave at 9:30 to caravan to the mine, organizers said.

For Sunday’s trip, the group is meeting at the Negaunee Township Hall on M-35 south of U.S. 41 between Negaunee and Marquette.
