NEGAUNEE – Before long, hockey players and other ice enthusiasts will be passing through the entrance of the Negaunee Ice Arena, which is under construction on Rail Street.
Elaine Juidici, chairman of the fund-drive for the arena, accepted checks Monday from Al Jensen, representing the Negaunee Lions Club, and John Basolo and Jack Anderson who represented the Negaunee basketball league, which donated proceeds from the annual Negaunee Invitational Tournament.

IRON MOUNTAIN – Fifty years ago there was not a single telephone in Michigan or anywhere else in the world. Yesterday the Michigan Bell Telephone company installed its two hundred thousandth telephone in the Iron Mountain post of the Ford Motor Company and the first call from it was made to Charles C. Sorenson, Mr. Ford’s representative at River Rouge by E.G. Kingsford, Mr. Ford’s representative in charge of the Upper Peninsula properties.

MARQUETTE – “Daring to Care” isn’t just the title of an article published recently by a Northern Michigan university nursing professor, it’s also the personal philosophy of Mary Ann Norton, R.N., MSN, CPNP, who teaches it to her students in a child-adult nursing course.
One of her students, Kathy Plowe of Crystal Falls, put “daring to care” into practice with Dustin Haglund, 5, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Haglund, Skandia, who was a recent patient at Marquette General Hospital.

MARQUETTE – The Exchange Club had its annual Christmas party for the children of Howard Annex School in the Sky Room of the Northland Hotel. Music for the children was played by Rex Bingnall after which a turkey dinner with all the trimmings was served to the youngsters.
Archery classes, sponsored by the City Recreation Department, will begin soon after the first of the year. Recreation Director Morgan Gingrass announced that the bow and arrow classes will be taught in the National Guard Armory on Presque Isle Avenue. Last year approximately 200 persons attended the classes.

MARQUETTE – Maj. James G. Jajich, assistant professor of military science at Northern Michigan University, was awarded a U.S. Army Certificate of Achievement for outstanding performance. LTC Howard B. Schweppe, head of the department of military science, presented the certificate.
Jajich is a member of the 107th Engineering Battalion of Michigan National Guard. A resident of Marquette, he is in his fourth year of an active duty tour at Northern.

NEGAUNEE – State and municipal police raided a soft drink parlor on Iron Street and a dwelling on East Case Street. Evidence for warrants in both cases was secured by state police operatives.
At the soft drink parlor, police said they found a quantity of moonshine liquor and glass containers partially filled with liquor, as well as several glasses used for drinking.

CHRISTMAS – Santa’s big day has come and gone, so the little community of Christmas in Alger County can go back to sleep for another year.
Postal employees Chris Cook and Patty Rosefort report that the deluge of holiday mail processed through the tiny post office reached more than 7,000 individual items just during the holiday season.
Annually, the post office receives numerous letters from throughout the world to be stamped with the Christmas, Michigan, postmark. Letters from as far away as France came this year, according to Cook.

HARVEY – William Warren and Claire Harrington will open their new dance pavilion on M-15 near Harvey with a holiday party next week.
They have not yet selected a name for the place and announced last night that they would give a cash prize of $25 to the person who submits the best name.

MARQUETTE – The Bishop Baraga eighth grade girls’ basketball team captured the Marquette County Junior High Tournament with a 40-37 win over Gwinn in the championship tilt. Bishop Baraga won the league regular season title with a 9-0 mark, and it finished 12-0 overall. Members of the championship team are: Kerri Lorena, Staci Schroeder, Jennifer Holland, Jennifer Schmeltzer, Chris Boyer, Melanie Hurley, Nanette Lara, Kristie Hillier, Lisa Jackson, and coach Philip Hansen.

ISHPEMING – Scheduled to start in the near future is the Lake Bancroft sewer project, a small part of the over-all sewer and sewage disposal project which was approved in a recent city council meeting for construction by city crews. About 2,700 feet of sewer is involved on Cliff, Battery and Hazel Streets to serve 22 homes in that region.
MARQUETTE – Walin’s Electric Shop at 215 West Washington Street, is the oldest electrical contracting and appliance store in the Marquette district. Founded in 1912 by the late Michael Walin, Walin’s Electric first was located in the rear of Lammi’s Grocery Store; however, because of fire, the building was destroyed and a new structure was built. Owned by Rudolph Walin, the store also employs Ryder Gustafson, Lee Carter, Joseph Dunham, and Charles Gorgarn.

GWINN – Mike Baumann saw the need for a series of events for the Upper Peninsula’s top bowlers, and he set out to create the Upper Peninsula Championship Bowling circuit, which has already made stops in Marquette and Escanaba. Baumann said the events are open to all men and women who are currently participating in U.P. Bowling Association leagues. “With no publicity out,” Baumann said, “we had 29 entries,” referring to the Nov. 30 outing at Marquette’s Elks Lanes. There is a schedule of dates, sites, and times available.

ISHPEMING – The Michigan State Open Championships in ski jumping will be held Sunday, Jan. 1 at Ishpeming’s Suicide Hill. This meet will serve to open the jumping season in the Central U.S. Ski Association, through which the meet is sanctioned.
MARQUETTE – The senior class of Graveraet High School will usher in the holiday season in traditional fashion tonight with the presentation of their Christmas dance, “Silver Bells,” in the Sidney Adams Gymnasium. This year’s dance promises to be something different, as it will be the first time records have ever been used and patrons will dance to “the best bands in the land.”

MARQUETTE – Skiers will find one big change that will expedite their trip up the hill a midway unloading station has been constructed and is now in use., enabling them to use the best portion of the hill while avoiding the long ride to the top. Vern Barber, general manager for the ski area’s owner, Cliffs Ridge Inc., explained that the eastern chair lift formerly took skiers all the way to the top of the hill a trip that lasted about 7 minutes. Building of the midway unloading station will permit skiers after a four-minute ascent to get off and use the best part of the hill.

NEGAUNEE – According to figures available at the close of navigation this year, shipments in iron ore from the Negaunee and Palmer districts aggregated 2,186,610 tons. The Negaunee district total this year is 1,468,526 tons, while that of the Palmer district of Cascade range is 718,084. The Negaunee Mass and Athens mines, Cleveland-Cliffs Iron company properties in the Negaunee district, shipped 947,464.

MARQUETTE – Jan VanAbel, food production supervisor at Marquette General Hospital, and seven other food staff members spent many long hours creating their Alpine village complete with an ornate church, homes, and a gingerbread train for their entry in the hospital’s annual Christmas decorating contest. “We all decided what part of the village to work on and completed the various parts,” VanAbel said. Included in the village are ice skaters on a crystal clear pond created by melting blue mints and pouring the mixture over a gingerbread base. The train track consists of licorice and peppermint candies. One of the homes is a log cabin made of breadsticks. The food service’s village earned them a tie for first place along with the Neurology Dept.

NEGAUNEE – Dedication services will be conducted this evening in the new Washington School at the Tannery location, commencing at 8 p.m. A program has been arranged by H.A. Wood, superintendent of schools. The public is cordially invited to attend the exercises. Following the dedication exercises, the building will be opened for inspection.

ISHPEMING – Senior guard Robin LeGassa took home most of the individual honors Thursday night as Westwood High School’s girls basketball team was saluted at a dinner held in the school cafeteria.
LeGassa and teammate Kellie Gleason were both placed on the Mid-Peninsula Conference all-star squad. The Patriots, along with coach Tom Hammar, were honored for their 16-9 overall record and district and regional championships in the 1985 campaign

MUNISING – Charles W. Nicholas has been named general manager of the Marquette plant of the Munising Wood Products Company, effective Jan. 1, succeeding Max Nunemaker who has retired.
Nicholas has been associated with the firm 17 years, beginning as draftsman. In the intervening years he has held a succession of offices and since 1945 has been assistant manager.

GWINN – Shoppers at Larry’s Family Store and the Kountry Korner in Forsyth Township have a special treat coming with each bag of groceries.
Students at McDonald Elementary School have decorated the bags with Christmas art and poetry, giving Gwinn area residents a look at the holiday through the youngsters’ eyes.

MARQUETTE – Young Kaufman, president of The First National Bank & Trust Company of Marquette, announced that, due to popular demand, the model trains were once again set up and will be in operation until the first of the year.
Harold Herlich Jr., a teller at the First National, is in charge of the train operation that runs for a few minutes every hour on the hour.

MARQUETTE – The holiday season is upon us and the Peter White Public Library will be bringing the musical spirit of Christmas to area residents through a variety of displays and special programs beginning Friday.
The theme of the library’s celebration is “Strike the harp and join the chorus,” and will continue through Dec. 28.
“This is the library’s gift to the community,” said Ruth Kell, library director. “Our holiday program offers something for everyone.”
A special highlight will be the showing of a videotape of the career of local author Dorothy Bird and a dramatic reading of her story, “A Christmas to Remember.”
Brad Beck, 3, of Marquette, was fascinated by the musical Christmas tree during a recent visit to the library’s Heritage Rooms. The large tree features a variety of musical instrument ornaments and notes. The public and area classrooms are invited to attend the holiday events.

NEGAUNEE – Two prize-winning films, both in color and with sound, will be shown in the Eagle’s clubrooms following the business meeting of the Negaunee Aerie tonight. “Dearborn Holiday” is a pictorial study of Dearborn, home of the Ford Motor Company. The second “Highway of the Sea,” tells the story of travel along U.S. Highway 101, which flanks the Pacific Ocean from Mexico to Canada.

MARQUETTE – Tasson Distributing Co. of Ishpeming has been chosen by Adolph Coors Co. to be one of 28 wholesalers throughout the state to sell Coors products.
Coors, the nation’s fifth largest brewer, recently announced that it plans to add Michigan as the 45th state in its marketing territory in 1986.
Vincent Tasson, president of the distributing company, Peter Coors, brewery representative, and Michael Tasson, vice president of the distributor, attended a meeting with wholesalers.

MARQUETTE – Street car company officers have complained to police that young boys, in violation of a city ordinance, have been “hooking” rides on the cars and that efforts by motormen to check the practice have not been successful.

MARQUETTE – Preparing to join in observance of Johnson’s Sporting Goods’ 40th anniversary, Robert Thomsen believes that rejuvenation of downtown Marquette can’t help but benefit merchants in that sector.
Thomsen opened up an appliance and sports store with Walt Johnson in December, 1945. Johnson’s Sporting Goods store is located downtown at 114 W. Washington St. A branch store was opened at 1212 N. Third Street six years ago.
Rex Elliott, who has been with the store about 15 years, manages the downtown store, while Thomsen’s son John manages the Third Street branch.
Thomsen believes Johnson’s Sporting Goods has grown into one of the “most complete” sports stores in the Upper Peninsula handling everything from darts to weight-lifting equipment.

NEGAUNEE – Gifts for patients at the Morgan Heights sanatorium, contributed through the Negaunee Women’s club, should be delivered at the home of Mrs. John E. Nelson at 217 Main St. no later than Tuesday of next week.
There are 18 patients at the institution, and gifts of fruit, flowers, books, magazines – but not candy – will be appreciated.

MARQUETTE – Parishioners of St. John’s Catholic Church in Marquette won’t be able to celebrate weekend Mass in their church this winter. Church services will be conducted in the Bishop Baraga Gymnasium because of loose bricks on the south wall, according to St. John’s pastor the Rev. Thomas Bain.
“The bricks are loose over the front wall and need some work,” Bain said. “The situation was too dangerous to keep the church open so we decided to temporarily close for public use.”
Bain added that Mass during the week and confession will be in the rectory meeting room. He hopes repair work can be started in the spring.

ISHPEMING – At the new Francis A. Bell Memorial Hospital, patients are no longer taken directly from the operating table to their room. A halfway stop, the new recovery room, enables the staff to keep a patient who has just completed major surgery under close supervision until he is fully conscious.
NEGAUNEE – Private Melvin E. Saari of Negaunee received the coveted “wings” of a parachutist. Private Saari is a member of “C” Battery, 89th Field Artillery Battalion of the 11th Airborne Division here.
He entered service in June 1955 and took basic training at Fort Campbell, KY. Saari is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Saari at Bellevue Location in Negaunee.

MUNISING – Visitors to the Alger County Historical Building during the first week of December got a Christmas treat in the form of yuletide trees from several different countries. The trees were spread in rooms throughout the house and each room with a tree also featured a display depicting the Christmas tradition of a cultural ethnic group. “Our community was heavily ethnic,” said organizer, Isabella Sullivan, of the founding of Alger County. “I think this is representative of what the ethnic community can do living together. People from the different groups were very happy to do this and show people their customs,” said Sullivan. Displays and trees included in the week long festivities were Polish, Irish, Slovenian, Indian, German, Finnish, Scandinavian, Brazilian, and Japanese. Ethnic foods were served throughout the week.

MARQUETTE – The G Sharp Music Club met at the home of Mrs. H.I. Sharp Sunday afternoon to play a program of holiday music. The students studied great musicians and, during the afternoon, took a musical quiz, played games and enjoyed a social hour. Those participating were Rosemary Rouman, Bernice Heikkala, Jean Wilson, Judy Summers, Janice Basal, Carol Camilli, Barbara Pearson, Judith Neault, Lois Jackson and Linda Sanderson.

MARQUETTE – Derek Koltvedt, 7, and his buddy Christian Fladung, 6, spent the past summer smashing rocks and digging around the beach area along Lakewood Lane looking for relics. And the result of their labors was revealed in the 30-million-year-old fossil embedded in a rock they found.
The fossil was carbon-dated at Michigan State University and was determined to be the skull of a boar-like herbivore coming from southwest South Dakota – probably arriving in the Upper Peninsula aboard a glacier. The fossil is in very good condition with a full row of upper and lower teeth exposed.

ISHPEMING – The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company’s crews have started to move steam shovels, which have been in service at the mines since last spring, into the company’s shops where they will be overhauled and rebuilt.
MARQUETTE – Miss Olive Lamaire, 208 Division Street, entertained at a theater party for 12 last night at the Delft and a dancing party last week for her friend, Miss Maud Phelps of Washburn, Wis., who returned home after a week’s visit here.

MARQUETTE – Through arrangement with McDonald’s Restaurant, breakfast is now being served to guests at the Westwood Motel on U.S. 41 West. Both Ed Brault, McDonald’s proprietor, and Frank and Linda Stabile, owners of the Westwood Motel, said they believe this is the first time such an arrangement has been set up in the Midwest. The service is offered seven days a week.
Delivery takes place at 7:30 a.m., but that time may be changed if a majority of guests prefer another time.

MARQUETTE – David Stenglein has been awarded first prize of $3 in the contest to design Santa’s workshop, which is being used in Marquette during the shopping season, announced Ben E. Knauss, secretary manager of the Marquette Chamber of Commerce. Of the 200 or so designs submitted, Deloris Wilson was second with Diana Lamirand a close third.

NEGAUNEE – Gusting winds up to 52 mph coupled with nearly 23 inches of snow joined forces to paralyze the central Upper Peninsula over the weekend, according to Marvin Taulbee of the National Weather Service at the Marquette County Airport.
In storm related developments, residents of 27 homes along Bayou Road and Shot Point in Chocolay Township were being evacuated by the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue Unit.
Several areas in Marquette County were without power late this morning, but repair crews were on the job. Damage at the U.S. Coast Guard Station at Marquette, caused by 20-30 foot waves, was still being assessed this morning.

ISHPEMING – The George Helgren family of South Main Street must hold the record for this deer season. The family of five brought home five deer, with two of the bucks going 200 pounds and shot at about 200 yards. All the deer were killed in the “Wild West” area.
