Marquette home invasion suspect arrested on-scene
SHUMATE
MARQUETTE — A Marquette man was arrested during a home invasion incident at approximately 5:19 a.m. on Saturday, according to the Marquette Police Department.
The incident occurred on the 2000 block of Van Evera Avenue, being called in as a reported assault involving a handgun.
As a result of the investigation, 24-year-old River-Jordan Thomas Shumate was arrested for first-degree home invasion, carrying a weapon with unlawful intent, assault with a dangerous weapon, two counts of felony firearms and possession of cocaine.
Shumate’s bond is currently set at $10,000.
“There’s more to the story that we’re not going to release right at this moment,” said Captain of Detectives Greg Kinonen.
During the investigation, it was learned that the weapon was not fired but was used as an object to strike the victim multiple times. The victim has multiple lacerations to his head and face resulting in him being transported to UPHS-Marquette by EMS for treatment of his injuries.
“(Concerning) the victim’s injuries, he was treated and released from the hospital,” Kinonen said.
Assisting with this incident was the Michigan State Police, NMU Police Department, Marquette Fire Department and UPHS EMS.
Shumate’s probable cause conference is scheduled for 9 a.m. Aug. 22 with a preliminary examination scheduled for 10 a.m. Aug. 28.
