MARQUETTE — Zack Sedgwick, principal of Superior Hills Elementary School, has been named interim superintendent for Marquette Area Public Schools.
Bill Saunders, the current MAPS superintendent, earlier this summer announced his resignation, and plans to leave on or before Oct. 1.
Saunders said Sedgwick has been with the school district for 13 years, having served as a high school math teacher and assistant principal for five years at Bothwell Middle School. Sedgwick just completed his third year as principal at Superior Hills.
He will be the district’s interim superintendent through June 30 while the search for a permanent replacement continues.
Sedgwick posted a letter on the MAPS website, which reads in part:
“During the past 13 years at MAPS, I have served at Marquette Senior High School, Bothwell Middle School and most recently at Superior Hills Elementary School. My time at various levels and in multiple capacities has afforded me a unique perspective.
“There exists a foundation of excellence throughout our school community which I’ve noted many times over. Whether teaching algebra, supervising athletic events, helping a 5-year-old work through challenging phonics, or now as I oversee many facets of our district’s program, I continue to be impressed by so many for their desire to learn, heart to care and willingness to be flexible despite the circumstances.
“This past year has truly tested the resolve of all members of our school community. The pandemic forced us to restructure much of how we operate. Recent updates provide evidence this trend will, to a certain extent, remain. Despite the challenges, past and present, MAPS continues to perform exceptionally well and it is with full conviction that I believe our district will maintain our time-honored tradition of excellence.”
Saunders said Stephanie Anderson will be the interim principal at Superior Hills. Anderson has served as assistant principal at Bothwell for the last two years and has about 22 years of teaching experience.
