Sentinels pull out hitting shoes for DH sweep of Cougars

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School baseball team laced up their special set of hitting shoes to come up with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Superior Central on Monday.

The Sentinels scored wins of 12-2 and 13-6.

After playing Bessemer on Wednesday, MSHS has a home game vs. Ironwood at 4 p.m. today, another home game vs. Westwood at 4 p.m. Friday, and a third straight at home vs. Houghton at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Sentinels hit the road for a 5 p.m. game at Escanaba on Monday before returning home to host Kingsford at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Here are details from the games vs. SC:

Marquette 12, SC 2

In the opener, lefty pitcher Alex Brennan didn’t allow a run or hit in 2 2/3 innings, walking three and striking out four. He gave way to Jameson Sandstrom for one inning of shutout ball, not allowing a hit as he walked two and K’d one.

Isaac Rondeau was the starter for the Cougars, giving up five runs — but just two earned — on three hits over 1 1/3 innings as he chalked up a strikeout and walked one.

Desmond Gleason and Wes Robinson each had two hits and stole multiple bases for the winners, while Jacob Geller had three RBIs while going 1 for 3. Robinson also drew two of his team’s seven walks, while Marquette also stole eight bases.

Jaykob Dahm paced SC by drawing two of his team’s seven walks.

Marquette scored twice in the first, a run each coming in on a Geller groundout and an error.

Three more came home in the second on a Robinson two-run triple and Gleason RBI single, then another scored in the third when Drew Erickson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Marquette 13, SC 6

In the nightcap, the visiting Cougars got on the board first when Brandon Boyak clubbed a two-run double in the top of the first.

But Marquette answered with four runs of its own in the bottom of the inning, a run each scoring on Gleason and Geller singles, a Jack Keough bases-loaded walk and Geller steal of home.

In the second, the Sentinels put across three more on an Evan Brown double, Easton Jezewski triple and Daniel Grampie walk with the bases loaded, then really put on the heat with four more in third to make it 11-2. In that rally, Gleason and Jezewski each hit RBI groundouts with Keough cracking a two-run, inside-the-park homer.

Gleason was the benefactor of his teammate lusty hitting, allowing two runs — one earned — on a hit and four walks as he struck out six in three innings. Jonas Snapp and Luke Korpi relieved for Marquette.

Dahm started for SC, allowing four runs on three hits in his one inning as he K’d two and walked two.

Among the Sentinels’ 11 hits, Robinson and Geller each had two as Geller, Gleason, Jezewski and Keough had two RBIs apiece. Geller and Grampie both drew two of Marquette’s nine walks, while Keough had two of his team’s six steals.

Leadoff batter Rondeau led the Cougars, going 2 for 3 and making two steals. SC also drew six walks and stole four bases.
