Dog park coming to Negaunee

NEGAUNEE — The Negaunee City Council approved a land use agreement at their last regular meeting in April, for the construction and maintenance of a dog park.

A plan was presented to the city’s Parks and Recreation Commission and Negaunee Planning Commission, both recommending its approval.

The agreement was made with the Iron Town Dog Park, a not-for-profit group of community driven individuals wanting to provide a safe, welcoming, off-leash space for dogs. The dog park will be located near Jackson Mine Park in a section of Old Town across from the Jim Thomas Pavilion. The park will include a fenced in area for larger dogs and a separate area for smaller dogs.

“The park will be about 1.3 acres in size. We have a strong group of volunteers eager to see this project through,” Miles Stearn of the ITDP said. ITDP has begun fundraising, with the hopes of breaking ground this summer.

Those interested in helping build the park or making contributions to the efforts can reach out to the Iron Town Dog Park group through their Facebook site, or contact Miles via email at milostearn@hotmail.com.

Questions concerning this release may be directed to the attention of the City Manager Nate Heffron at 906-475-7700 extension 11.

Starting at $3.23/week.
