Woman dies in trailer park fire

GWINN — A woman was found dead Saturday morning after a structure fire occurred at a residence in the 553 Mobile Estates trailer park along M-553 north of Gwinn, according to authorities at the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office.

First responders arrived at the scene around 9 a.m. and found “heavy smoke and fire” coming from the residence, police said in a press release.

Sheriff’s deputies attempted to locate the homeowner at the time, but were unable to. Responders also attempted to look inside the residence but “entry was not possible,” police said.

The Sands Township Fire Department then arrived on scene and began to extinguish the blaze, but “the trailer was heavily involved in fire and any further rescue could not be attempted,” according to officials. After the fire was extinguished, a body was found in the ruins of the residence, police said.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office is working with the Marquette County Medical Examiner’s Office to positively identify the body and contact next of kin.

The fire remains under investigation by Marquette County authorities and the Michigan State Police Fire Marshal Division, police said.

There were no updates on the victim’s identity or the investigation as of this morning, authorities with the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office said.

The Sands Township Fire Department was assisted by the Forsyth Township Fire Department, the Chocolay Township Fire Department, the Marquette Township Fire Department, the Marquette County Technical Rescue Unit, the Michigan State Police, the Marquette Board of Light and Power and the American Red Cross.
