Fourth of July events in the Iron Mountain area

IRON MOUNTAIN — Local communities are preparing to offer a number of events throughout the weekend and into next week to celebrate the Independence Day holiday.

Area parade, events and fireworks plans include:

IRON MOUNTAIN

Ben Sherk of Kingsford will be the 2023 grand marshal for the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Independence Day Parade set for Tuesday. Sherk was band director at Breitung Township Schools for more than 30 years.

This year’s parade theme is “Sports.” Participants are encouraged to incorporate any recognized athletic sport or sports team into their entry/float.

THE NORWAY CITY Band marches in the community’s 2022 parade. This year’s parade in Norway steps off at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday with a kiddie parade. The main parade will follow at about 6 p.m.

The parade, organized again this year by the Menominee Range Historical Foundation’s Promotional Committee, will step off at 9 a.m. on Woodward Avenue at Balsam Street. It will proceed east on Woodward, take a left on Carpenter Avenue until it reaches H Street and turns right. They will disband near the Midtown Mall in Iron Mountain.

As a reminder, spectators are not permitted on Balsam Street due to safety concerns in the parade staging area. Parade participants will begin to distribute candy and other items from floats when they turn onto Woodward Avenue.

Eligible parade entrants will be scored on entertainment value, creativity and public appeal by the judges, at the corner of Woodward and Carpenter avenues. Winners will be announced on the parade’s Facebook page and will also be in The Daily News. The first-place Carnegie Cup traveling trophy and second- and third-place winners will receive plaques.

The Uren-Cooper-Johnson American Legion Post 50 of Iron Mountain will host a cookout immediately after the parade Tuesday at 916 River Ave., Iron Mountain. They will serve brats, Italian sausage patties, hot dogs, hamburgers, corn on the cob and beverages. Kids will receive free hot dogs and ice cream.

The Sons of the American Legion Post 50 in Iron Mountain has again organized the annual community fireworks show to take place at dusk Tuesday from Millie Hill on Iron Mountain’s east side. In case of rain, the fireworks has been tentatively rescheduled to Friday, July 7.

Donation checks can be made payable to SAL Fireworks Fund-2023 and mailed to SAL Fireworks Fund, P.O. Box 1046, Iron Mountain, MI 49801. Iron Mountain Fire Department will be part of the fundraising efforts as they walk the Independence Day parade route with the “Fill the Boot” campaign, collecting donations in a firefighter’s boot. Volunteers will again collect donations for the food pantry. They will accept unexpired, non-perishable food, personal care items, cleaning supplies and cash donations.

NORWAY

Norway’s Fourth of July parade will kick off at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday with the kiddie parade, with the main parade to follow at about 6 p.m.

Participants are asked to line up at least 45 minutes early for judging. No registration is required to take part in the parade. Children are asked to line up on 10th Avenue, with the main parade entries to line up on Railroad Avenue.

The Norway Volunteer Fire Department, which is organizing the event, will conduct the fireworks display at dusk Tuesday. Before the fireworks, the Norway City Band will have a public concert.

In case of rain, the fireworks will be postponed to a later date.

There will also be a fireworks display this Friday night after races are finished at the Norway Speedway.

HAMILTON LAKES

The Hamilton Lakes Association will host its annual Fourth of July boat parade at 2 p.m. Tuesday on the chain of lakes.

Participants are asked to meet at the east end of Lake Louise. They will follow the Lake Louise shoreline and travel through the channel and circle Hamilton Lake.

The parade will conclude after the boats circle near the Hamilton Lake boat launch. Prizes will be awarded formost and original patriotic boats by the Hamilton Lakes Association. No preregistration is required.

SPREAD EAGLE, Wis.

A fireworks display is planned at dusk Monday at the Spread Eagle Chain of Lakes in Spread Eagle.

The Spread Eagle Chain of Lakes Association will sponsor its annual boat parade at 1 p.m. Tuesday with the theme of “Tall Tales & Fairy Tales.” Prizes will be awarded.

They will also host a ice cream social at Melin’s on North Lake Channel at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The Badwater Ski-Ters will perform at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Vagabond Park.

FELCH TOWNSHIP

An American Legion baseball tournament Saturday begins the holiday weekend. First game is set for 9 a.m., with concessions available by the Felch Fire Department.

Fireworks will start at dusk Saturday in Felch.

The annual Fourth of July parade begins at noon Tuesday. The parade will begin on 14th Avenue and ends at the Community Center.

CHANNING

Sagola Township’s annual Independence Day parade will kick off down M-95 at 2 p.m. Saturday. Participants are asked to line up on Turner Road.

The annual community picnic, sponsored by the Sagola Township Sportsmen’s Club, will take place immediately after the parade at the Channing athletic complex. Adult beverages and soda will be available. No carry-ins will be allowed. Music will be by Mel Rose, Jack Peterson and J.J. Fende, to begin at 5 p.m.

Bingo will begin after the parade. They will also have cornhole tournament and 50-50 drawings taking place throughout the day. To pre-register for the tournament, call 906-282-2299.

Kids can enjoy games and activities as well as a bounce house from 4 to 8 p.m. Fireworks will be set off at dusk.

HERMANSVILLE

The annual Hermansville Independence Day celebration is planned for 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at Hermansville Lake and Park.

Festivities kick off with the kids parade at 11:15 a.m., with the main parade to follow. Line-up and registration will begin at 10 a.m. at IXL Drive. Children are to line up at 10:30 a.m. at the park entrance. Veterans are asked to meet at 10 a.m. at the American Legion Post 340 to ride on the float.

Awards include float prizes of $200, $150, $75 and $50; antique car prizes of $50 and $25; classic car prizes of $50 and $25; best-decorated ORV prizes of $25 and $15; and two best-decorated bicycle prizes of $10 each. There also will be prizes given to all children in the parade. Prizes will be awarded at the park.

Food, refreshments, music and games will be available at the park as well.

Runaway Train with special guest the Night Train band will perform for the crowd from noon to 6 p.m. Those attending are encouraged to bring a lawn chair.

The ACA slides and bounce house and games will be open at noon for kids.

Registration for the Rusty Nuts Car Club show next to the IXL Historical Museum will be 8 to 11 a.m., with trophy presentation at 3 p.m. Motorcycles can also be entered. Door prizes will be given out throughout the day.

The American Legion Post 340 will conduct a 50-50 raffle at the lake.

The IXL Historical Museum will be open from noon to 4 p.m. and the Vietnam Veterans Museum will be open from 8 to 11 a.m.

Registration for the Hermansville Mud Bogs will be 8 to 11 a.m. Entry fee is $20 for stocks and $30 for mods. Runs begin at noon. For more information, call 906-368-0568. POWERS-SPALDING

The annual Powers-Spalding Independence Day Celebration is planned for Tuesday at the Veterans Memorial Park in Powers.

The “Patriotic” theme parade steps off at 10:30 a.m. Participants can register at 9:30 a.m. at the Lions Club building on Old Highway 41. Cash prizes will be awarded for the best floats.

Following the parade, festivities continue at the park, with food, refreshments and games. Live music will be provided for the day by Larry and Cheryl Pepin.

Truck pulls will begin at noon; registration is at 10:30 a.m. A fishing derby, sponsored by the Normenco Sportsmen’s Club, runs from noon to 3 p.m.

They will also feature dunk tank, kids games and bounce house provided by North Central Area Parent Network, Little League and Youth Wrestling.

An outdoor market is planned as well that will include local crafters, growers and bakers offering their goods.

The Lions Club will conduct a gun raffle with tickets available at the event.

The celebration is sponsored by the Powers-Spalding Lions Club and the Tony Revord American Legion Post 244 and Sons of the American Legion Post 244.

FLORENCE, Wis.

Fireworks over Fisher Lake, presented by the Florence Volunteer Fire Department, will start at dusk Friday, July 7.

LONG LAKE, Wis.

The annual Long Lake Fire/EMS Fourth of July festivities are planned from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.

“The Great Outdoors” parade steps off at noon on State Highway 139, with line-up at 11 a.m. They encourage classic cars, horses, old farm equipment and others to take part.

Food available includes brats and burgers, along with beverages. Proceeds will benefit the fire department.

They will have music and kids games at the ball park, 3324 Main St., starting at 1 p.m., along with a Touch-a-Truck event and visit from Smokey Bear.

Those attending are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs. The party will continue at the Roadhouse 139 pavilion, where The Crossroads band will play from 5 to 10 p.m. The Long Lake Volunteer Fire Department will also conduct 50-50s and other raffles throughout the event.

PEMBINE, Wis.

The Beecher-Dunbar-Pembine Fourth of July celebration will feature a variety of activities throughout the community Saturday to celebrate the Independence Day holiday.A fishing tournament for kids up to age 14 is planned at the Dunbar Fishing Pond starting at 10 a.m.

Thermal Chaos, Patti’s Platter Pies and Devicello’s Pizza food trucks will serve from 2 to 7 p.m.

A Sidewalk Chalk Contest is open for kids through age 18 from 3 to 6 p.m. next to the Pembine Post Office, with the theme of “America.”

Vendors and crafters will set up downtown.

Everyone is invited to tour the ambulance, fire trucks and conservation trailer, and visit with Smokey Bear. They will also have bounce houses for the kids. Local band Money 2 Burn will perform at 7 p.m. at the Silver Dollar and the Paul Family Bluegrass will play at 7 p.m. at Winters Family Restaurant. Fireworks will be at 9:30 p.m.In case of inclement weather the event will be postponed until Wednesday.

GOODMAN, Wis.

Goodman Fire Department will host its annual Fourth of July street dance from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday at the Goodman Fire Hall, 506 Mill St. Audion Entertainment will provide the DJ music starting at 7 p.m.

They will offer food, refreshments and raffles. No carry-ins are allowed. Admission is free. All proceeds go toward needed fire equipment. Fireworks will be at dusk Friday over Mill Pond.

IRON RIVER

The American Legion Reino Post 21 Sons of the American Legion will host a breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. Sunday.

The Fourth of July parade starts at 10 p.m. Monday, with line-up at the West Iron County High School bus garage. Participants can start registration at 8 a.m. by the administration building. The parade will be led by the Westside Veterans Council Honor Guard, followed by Parade Marshal Jim Brennan and then World War II veteran Art Aregoni.

The route goes down Washington Street to Genesee Street, then west on Genesee to Seventh Avenue, where it will disband. A reviewing stand will be along Genesee Street. Parade prizes will be awarded.

A vintage aircraft flyover is scheduled for about 10 a.m., weather permitting.

All veterans are invited to participate in the West Side Veterans Council-sponsored float. Call Richard Weatherholt at 906-284-0078 to confirm a seat on the trailer. Pickup point for the veterans will be at the former Reporter office.

The West Iron County tennis club will walk the parade route soliciting donations for their organization and to help defray the cost of the fireworks, flyover and parade.

After the parade, the West Iron County Fire Department will give out free ice cream to the kids, as well as host races and a watermelon-eating contest.

The fireworks will be presented by the West Iron County Fire Department at dusk. The American Legion Reino Post 21 will have hot dogs and brats from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the front of the post at 212 Washington Ave. and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3134 will be cooking on the deck.

ALPHA

Independence Day festivities will start with the raising of the flag at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Village Circle in Alpha, featuring the “Voice of the Fourth” Adam Stender, the East Side Veterans Council and the Forest Park High School band.

The “Summer in the U.P.” parade will start at 10 a.m. at the Alpha Brewing Co. and continue through Alpha, then circle back to the brewery. Line-up will start at 9 a.m. behind the Village Hall. Kids will lead the procession.

After the parade, the Alpha-Mastodon Fire Department will provide free ice cream and caramel corn at the Village Hall. Several vendors — including Buddha Bean, Back Porch Eatery, Curious Pig, Flavor Blast, KLR Food Truck, Village Longhouse and the fire department — will offer a variety of food and beverages throughout the day.

Kids games begin at 11 a.m. They will have relays, coin toss and watermelon-eating contest, with prizes awarded.

At noon, the Yooper Kiddo Land opens that will feature dunk tanks, bounce and obstacle houses, face painting and other games and prizes.

A Farm and Craft Market will be open for the day.

They will also host adult games, including a volleyball tournament. Raffles and 50-50 are planned.

Entertainment begins with Musical Knights from noon to 3 p.m., The Legend of Freddie Finger Schnitz from 3 to 6 p.m. and Sons of Legend from 6 to 9:30 p.m.

Fireworks at dark are sponsored by the Mastodon Township and the Village of Alpha.

AMASA

Amasa’s celebration will begin with a sing-along Mass at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Church. The flag raising will take place at 10 a.m. at Joe Mechon Park, followed by the Albenio Webber Scholarship Award presentation. A picnic of brats and hot dogs is planned at 11 a.m.

The kiddie parade will follow at 11 a.m., as well as games and competitions, including a sack race, dash race, ping pong, women’s hay bale race, crosscut saw contest and a coin toss at the Amasa Museum. Ice cream will be handed out after the games.

A duck race hosted by the Amasa Historical Society is set for noon on the Hemlock River, followed by the raffle drawing at 1 p.m. The community softball game is set to begin at 2 p.m. Fireworks will begin at dusk in downtown Amasa.

WAUSAUKEE, Wis.

Wausaukee’s annual Independence Day Celebration takes place Saturday at the Marinette County Fairgrounds in Wausaukee.

The parade will begin at 1 p.m. downtown through Main Street. The craft and vendors will be set up at 9 a.m., with the horse speed show starting at 10 a.m. The mini rod pull is at 5 p.m. in the grandstands.

The group Radio Spirit will perform from 2 to 5 p.m., with Bad Mother Truckers from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. They will also have a cornhole tournament to begin at 4 p.m. Kids can enjoy bounce houses throughout the day.

The event is free to the public. Fireworks will begin at dusk.

CRIVITZ, Wis.

The traditional Fourth of July celebration will begin with the raising of the flag at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Crivitz Community Veterans Park, followed by the parade at 11 a.m. in downtown Crivitz. Activities will continue at the Crivitz Community Veterans Park, with a dunk tank, bouncy houses, and a farmers market. will be by Randy Peterson at 4 p.m. and BoomBoxx starting at 6:15 p.m.

The fireworks display is set to start at 9:30 p.m.
