MARQUETTE — After 34 years in business, Jim and Francise Higgins of Higgins Bingo Supplies are retiring and the iconic West Washington Street storefront is closing.
“What started in 1981 in my parents house in north Marquette, quickly grew into something special,” said Higgins in a post to the store’s Facebook page. “In 1982, Higgins Bingo Supplies opened its downtown storefront and became a part of the community for generations of customers and friends.
“I joined the business in 1992, and in 2013 my dad sold the business to me and began his well-earned ‘soft retirement.’
“That same year my wife Francise began working here, running the store while I traveled across the Upper Peninsula and parts of Wisconsin delivering supplies.”
Marquette tourists are often incredulous about the existence of a bingo supply store, but Higgins has enjoyed a successful business during its 34 years, supplying the entire Upper Peninsula with daubers, cards and more.
“The company lives on under new ownership and will transition to wholesale only, so the retail store downtown will be closing soon,” said Higgins. “No more hearing downtown visitors say ‘I’ve never seen a bingo store before.'”
In his retirement, Higgins says he plans to travel, spend time with his grandchildren and work on some remodeling projects.
“To all of our customers, vendors, friends, and family, we want to thank you for your support and loyalty over the years,” said Higgins. “We couldn’t have done it without you.”
