Letters To The Editor

Is free will free?

To the Journal editor: Has your political free-will been hacked? Maybe the following will allow you to take a deep breath and reduce your stress during this political season. Definition of free will: “Freedom of humans to make choices that are not determined by prior causes or by divine intervention.” I think the first sign our free-will is being hacked is when we do or condone something we would normally oppose doing. At the extreme end, during World War II Nuremberg trials a common theme surfaced for people actively participated in genocide, “I was just following ...

Good news here

To the Journal editor: A few weeks ago, I wrote this publication about the difficulty Upper Peninsula kids on the Upper Peninsula Health Plan had in obtaining medical care close to home in nearby Wisconsin. The letter I sent to this paper was filled with rage at the injustice of having to take a child to lower Michigan instead of being allowed access to care in nearby Wisconsin. I knew I was not the only parent of a child on Medicaid facing such injustice. So, in my letter I asked my fellow Yoopers to contact their state and federal lawmakers as well as the CEOs of Children’s ...

Season of faith

To the Journal editor: Spring is on the way. Have you noticed the days are longer and we might get more snow, but it should melt faster. Get out and enjoy the great outdoors. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan has a lot of beauty each season. I’ve been reading articles written by others to improve your health by getting off the tech stuff, smartphones, computers. Not good for your mental health. No personal connection with our fellow human beings. Even phone calls or written notes is more personal. I’ve read in the health magazines to do that. Also, this is Easter (season). Those ...

Changing shoreline worries

To the Journal editor: “Hey Honey, where did the backyard go?” Michigan stood with its arms on its hips as it looked at the Upper Penisula beginning to change shape before its very eyes. This might be seen as a funny joke on the changing coastline of the largest freshwater lake by area in the world and the healthiest Great Lake. Lake Superior is an indispensable resource for the area and the world. Dear my fellow Northern living friends, I am scared of the future. It is daunting to face head-on the harsh reality of the environmental crises around us. To everyone who grew up ...

No mystery here

To the Journal editor: Cal Thomas, in a recent column, describes the horrible gun massacre in Russia, and asks “Could it happen here?” He them goes on to ramble about immigrants to our southern border, none of whom have ever perpetrated a mass shooting. Does Mr. Thomas not notice that the U.S. has mass shootings almaot every day, and that the cause is not immigrants seeking a better life, but instead is easy access to guns.

Mideast matters

To the Journal editor: The historic significance of what President Jimmy Carter Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin did in September 1978, cannot be overestimated. They established a framework for a historic peace treaty concluded between Israel and Egypt in March 1979 and is still holding firmly to this day. That treaty was the first such treaty between Israel and any of its Arab neighbors and officially was titled the “Framework for Peace in the Middle East.” The agreements became known as the Camp David Accords because the negotiations ...
