60 years ago MARQUETTE – An escape try by a federal prisoner being held in the Marquette County Jail was discovered Saturday, Sheriff Adrian A Pequet reported this morning. Officers making a routine check found that Roy Waldo, Reed City, one of three federal prisoners awaiting trial in U.S. District Court here next month on charges of bank robbery, had cut a hole in the ceiling of his cell, using a piece of steel he had concealed in the sole of his shoe. Road closures planned for Marji Gesick 50-mile race

MARQUETTE — Motorists traveling through Marquette Saturday morning should be alert for temporary road closures and detours as the Marji Gesick 50-mile mountain bike race gets underway. The race is scheduled to start on Lakeshore Boulevard between Washington Street and Spring Street. Riders will travel south toward the Carp River bridge using Lakeshore Boulevard, the city's multi-use path and Lake Street.
