Miss Sarah's Read "Bird! In Spring: Along Came a Spider" by Raymond McGrath JGN MCG- Bird in Spring #1) is a cute graphic novel perfect for newly independent readers. A bird and spider become friends, share experience like using webs to create a nest, and more. Younger kids who love a gentle graphic novel about unlikely friendship will clamor for this story.
Ms. Marissa's Read "Double Crossed: The WW II Spies Who Saved the Day" by Rebecca E. F. Barone (940.53BA) Friendship, betrayal, secret codes, danger! This middle grade read has got all the elements of a fast-paced narrative read while still being a historically accurate non-fiction complete with photographs, endnotes, and bibliography. Perfect for the middle grade reader who needs an engaging reference for a history report but may be reluctant to pick up non-fiction– or for anyone fascinated with World War II.
Miss Claire's Read "The Adventures of Cipollino" by Gianni Rodari (JFIC ROD). Cipollino is a little onion living in a world of other fruits, vegetables, and critters. Social and political injustice runs rampant, and the townsfolk live in fear of their cruel ruler, Prince Lemon. Brave Cipollino is a leader in the fight to liberate the citizens against their tyrannical government, using mischief and silly schemes to outsmart their oppressors. This classic children’s novel by "Italy's Roald Dahl" was published in 1951 but was recently translated into English for the first time and published with some wonderful new illustrations by Dasha Tolstikova. It is whimsical and fun, but with themes of political justice that echo the freshly post-Mussolini world in which it was written.
Ms. Grace's Read "Journey to Tomioka" by Laurent Galandon(JGN GAL). Like stepping into a Ghibli film, this graphic novel follows young siblings Osamu and Akiko as they travel through Fukushima's forbidden zone. Mix historical nuclear disaster with a boy who can speak to yōkai, and you'll find a daring adventure full of sibling love and tenacity. Ms. Holli's Read "Kitty-Corn Club: Parts of Us" by Shannon Hale (BOARDBOOK) Have a silly time with Kitty-Corn and all her friends learning about the many ways our bodies are different, unique, and amazing. This vibrant board book is a fun read and look for newborns to age 5. Additional book in the series: “Things That Go”
