30 years ago MARQUETTE - State wildlife biologists have reported that because of the mild winters and aggressive timber harvesting, the white tail deer population has risen to 900,000 in the U.P. John Hendrickson, state Department of Natural Resources regional wildlife biologist, estimates that this is a modern day-record for deer numbers. 30 years ago MARQUETTE – A Marquette mother believes the Gift of Reading program has had a positive impact on her daughter. The woman, who asked not to be identified, said her 14-year-old daughter received several books last year including a mystery story. “My daughter really enjoyed the books,” the woman said. “I think reading is very good for a child.” Sponsored by the Marquette-Alger reading Council, the Gift of Reading program is now accepting books to be distrusted to children in need at Christmas. 30 years ago MARQUETTE – Mike Springer was recently appointed to a two-year term on the board of directors of the Michigan Association of Computer-Related Technology Users in Learning. In his second year on the board, Springer is a tech-prep mathematics instructor at Marquette Area Public Schools. Established in 1975 and now with more than 4,00 members, MACUL brings educators together to share knowledge and concerns regarding educational uses of computers and technology. 30 years ago ISHPEMING – For the fifth consecutive year the Elks Lodges of Negaunee, Marquette, and Ishpeming will have their Pumpkin Patch party Saturday. The party will be at the Ishpeming Elks Lodge at 597 Lakeshore drive from 1 to 4 p.m. This party is presented for the benefit of children with disability in the tri-city area. The members of the three lodges have constructed houses from refrigerator boxes. 30 years ago ISHPEMING – Butler Theater will present its annual Halloween Costume and movie party at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. This is a benefit canned good show for the Salvation Army West End food coalition. A donation of two canned goods (with label intact) per person will be taken at the door. All children in costume will be given free popcorn and 20 winners will be selected each day. 30 years ago MARQUETTE – The High School Youth Group of St. Peter’s Cathedral will have its annual Halloween Party and “Holly Haunted House” from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday. Everyone is welcome to attend, especially children in kindergarten through eighth grade. Children are asked to dress up in their favorite Saints or Halloween costume and bring a canned good or a cash donation for admission.
