Marq’s adventure began in Mountain View, California to the care of Marquette native Bobbi WeesenBaer, former Peter White Public Library librarian, with instructions that he be transferred to another library after two weeks. 30 years ago MARQUETTE - The Peer Review Committee of Marquette High School has made their survey public after complaints of violence arose from current and former students. High school senior Bob Britton said there was a wide array of comments received from the 65 classrooms surveyed, but violence was not emphasized. Students believed that crowded hallways, drug abuse, and sexual harassment were their primary concerns before violence. 30 years ago MARQUETTE - Voices for Youth has received a grant of $255,000 to aid the county’s homeless and runaway teenagers for another three years. This was the only new Health and Human Services grant delivered in Michigan, proving its necessity and the group’s ability to collaboratively problem solve. Voices for Youth first opened its doors in March 1993, founded by the Lutheran Social Services of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan Inc., and in its first two years, assisted over 600 kids. 30 years ago WHITEFISH POINT - Nearly 100 relatives of the crewmen, friends, and dignitaries of the Edmund Fitzgerald crowded the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum for the 20th anniversary of the best known Great Lakes maritime disaster. The night began with a live performance of Gordon Lightfoot’s ballad “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” followed by the ringing of the ship’s bell, 30 times for the lives lost. 30 years ago MUNISING - The Munising City Commission has voted to raise sewer rates to pay for the $2.2 million loan needed for mandated repairs by the state Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). The city has been given a November 12 deadline to respond to five specific sewer system violations, or face enforcement action by the DEQ including possible fines of $25,000 a day. 30 years ago SHINGLETON - The state Department of Natural Resources will be selling a lake side camp in the Grand Sable State Forest. The complex, which includes a main lodge, cook house, carpenter shop, generator plant, bunk house, and over 600 feet of sandy shoreline, has been owned by the state since it was purchased from the Steams Coal and Lumber Company in 1930. It has existed in many forms including a game area headquarters and a field educational facility for several universities.
