30 years ago MARQUETTE - Bruce Pesola, local contractor, is looking to bring new life to the former Heritage House Hotel on North Front street. Now bustling with light and sound from renovators, the building is seeing its first visitors since its abandonment in 1982. If all goes well, this will be a new investment for Pesola, a hotel he is calling “The Landmark Inn of Marquette.” Pesola took ownership of the property from Ed Havlik of Grand Rapids on November 3rd, and the Marquette City Commission will hold a public hearing on whether or not to transfer a tax abatement to Pesola ...

30 years ago ISHPEMING - Two things have been saved by the longtime members of the Bethany Lutheran Church: a 110-year-old organ, and about $75,000. Church members have recently uncovered most of the original 1,015 pipes from the 1885 Schuelke Pipe Organ in the attic of the Church’s education unit. Some custodian believed that some of the old pipes, with their squared edges, were once steps from a set of risers. The organ console, pipe stand, and about 150 new pipes will need to be rebuilt at a cost of about $225,000, without the old pipes, the same organ would cost $300,000. The ...

30 years ago MUNISING - On Thanksgiving Day, a one hour radio program will be broadcast out of Chicago on the history of the Munising area as described in Loren Graham’s new book: “A Face in the Rock: The Tale of a Grand Island Chippewa.” Recalled by a New York Times book reviewer to be “richly entertaining,” Graham’s book covers a 40 year period in the Munising area, with past and present residents being the subjects of interest. 30 years ago HOUGHTON - A Governor’s Honor Roll Award was given to Laurie Hazzard last week for her work with the Copper Country Community Transition Council, a group dedicated to making trips from school to work more accommodating for students with learning disabilities. For six years, Hazzard had been content teaching geography, but upon learning of her son’s own learning disabilities, she became moved to better fill the gaps that traditional education overlooks.
