MARQUETTE – Couples have many unique strategies for tackling boredom: going to the movies, getting together with friends, or maybe having a game night. Gary and Joannie McGuffin, on the other hand, go on natural adventures. For their fifteen years of marriage, they have been exploring wild habitats that are used for inspiration in their books and lectures. Their most recent adventure? Canoeing the circumference of Lake Superior. They will be in Marquette this weekend promoting their book “Superior: Journeys on an Inland Sea” that chronicles their 80 day circumnavigation in 1989. The MacGuffin’s started their trip canoeing side by side from the Nipigon River, Ont. with no itinerary, just gear, and returned 80 days later. Their closeness to nature, especially Lake Superior, have made the McGuffins advocates for environmental preservation, speaking at the International Joint Commission about potential dangers to the great lakes health.
