Negaunee Miners’ Emily Paupore, Gladstone’s Adam Bruce score big winners at El Harger Memorial cross country meet in Munising

MUNISING — Emily Paupore of Negaunee and Adam Bruce of Gladstone each won individual cross country titles by nearly a minute at the El Harger Memorial Invitational held at Pictured Rocks Golf Club in Munising on Tuesday afternoon.

Bruce won the boys meet in a course and meet record of 16 minutes, 5.2 seconds, just over 55 seconds ahead of runner-up Uriah Aili of Wakefield-Marenisco-Bessemer, who posted 17:00.5.

The Gogebic County three-school alliance won the team title with 58 points, 15 ahead of second-place Houghton’s 73. Chassell was third with 98, followed by Gladstone with 104 and Negaunee fifth with 125.

Westwood was 10th with 263, while the host Mustangs, Gwinn and Manistique were among nine schools that didn’t field full teams.

Paupore crossed the girls’ finish line in 18:57.1, nearly 56 seconds ahead of runner-up Anabel Needham of Houghton’s 19:52.9 as runner-up.

But the Gremlins took the team title in a close race between a trio of Copper Country schools. Houghton scored 91 points to 95 for Hancock and 101 for Chassell. Menominee was fourth with 137, followed by St. Ignace with 165, Mid Peninsula 171 and Munising seventh with 200.

Negaunee was ninth with 219 as Gwinn, SC and Manistique were among a half-dozen schools that didn’t field full teams.

One other area girl also cracked the top 10, Madeleine Peramaki of Munising coming in seventh in 20:28.0.

Talon Prusi of Negaunee was 12th in 20:49.8 and Danika Walters of Superior Central was 14th in 20:53.6.

Also among the 102 finishers was Megan Matson of Munising, 34th in 22:34.3, Ashley McDonald of Manistique 36th in 22:37.2, Jenna Matson of Munising 42nd in 23:02.9, Taylin Behning of Munising 50th in 23:40.1 and Allie Mahoski of Negaunee 52nd in 23:45.9.

Gwinn’s top finisher was Alexia Banser, 58th in 24:13.9.

In the boys meet, two other area runners also cracked the top 10 — Alex Misniakiewicz of Manistique was sixth in 17:43.8, while Eric Anderson of Negaunee was eighth in 17:46.6.

Other top area finishers included Wesley Johnson of Negaunee, 22nd in 18:43.2; Alec Prusi of Negaunee, 23rd in 18:48.4; Larson Nebel of Munising, 25th in 18:58.8; Jacob Porubsky of Gwinn, 30th in 19:14.0; Wyatt Carlson of Westwood, 43rd in 19:54.2; Timothy Ziegler of Negaunee, 49th in 20:10.3; Corey Sansom of Negaunee, 53rd in 20:27.8; Nate Belongia of Gwinn, 54th in 20:28.1; and Brock Sundberg of Westwood, 55th in 20:33.8.
