Blank, Contreras combine for 51 in Munising win

By Journal Sports Staff

EBEN — Seniors Alec Blank and Cade Contreras combined to scored 51 points as Munising held off Superior Central 72-55 in a high school boys basketball game played Friday night.

Blank scored 30 points and pulled down 20 rebounds while Contreras added 21 points for the Mustangs (13-2).

“We got off to a good start, which was our focus after our slow start against Rapid River (earlier in the week),” MHS coach Terry Kienitz said. “(SC) started in a zone (defense), but Alec hit a 3 and Cade had three of them in the first quarter to kind of open up that zone.”

Munising held a 19-9 lead after one quarter, expanding it to 40-24 by halftime before the teams played nearly evenly over each of the last two quarters.

For the Cougars (7-9), senior Joe Heinonen led all scorers with 31 points as he also grabbed 13 rebounds. Fellow senior Wade Krysiak was next on the scoring list with seven points.

“Heinonen mostly hit outside,” Kienitz said. “He’s quite a weapon at 6(-foot-)5 or 6-6.”

Munising, which won the JV game 59-43 on Thursday night, hosts Carney-Nadeau in a makeup game Monday before traveling to North Central on Tuesday.

SC goes to Norway on Monday.
