NMU women name assistant coach

MARQUETTE – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team has added a new coach, head coach Troy Mattson announced on Thursday.

New Wildcats assistant coach Casey Thousand was previously the head coach at NCAA Division III Edgewood, Wisconsin. The longest tenured coach in Eagles’ history, she compiled an 83-97 record in seven seasons.

“We are very excited to have Casey join our women’s basketball coaching staff,” Mattson said. “She has many years of experience as a head coach and has many recruiting contacts in the state of Wisconsin, which will benefit our basketball program in the future.”

Edgewood went 74-57 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference games during her tenure. All-NACC honors were accorded to 15 Eagles players and the team made four league tournament appearances.

Before Edgewood, Thousand spent three years as an assistant coach at Division III Carthage, Wisconsin. She played collegiately at Division III Lakeland, Wisconsin, from 2000-04, capturing all-conference accolades each season.

Thousand earned her bachelor’s degree in sports and facility management from Lakeland and her master’s degree in guidance and counseling at Carthage.
