NMU-OTS wrestlers place

MARQUETTE – A pair of Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site Greco-Roman wrestlers took bronze medals at the Malar Cup in Vasteras, Sweden, over the weekend.

Ty Pelot of Two Rivers, Wisconsin, at 59 kilograms and Parker Betts of St. Michael, Minnesota, at 130 kg brought home the hardware. Both competed in the Senior Division.

Pelot finished with a 3-1 record, with an 8-0 victory over fellow American Randon Miranda in the bronze medal bout.

Betts went 1-2 in a four-athlete round robin, with all of the matches by decision.

Team USA placed third with 20 points, behind Huddinge BK club with 32 points and Team Nyland with 20. Team Nyland won a tiebreaker by having more silver medalists.

The U.S. team included athletes from NMU, the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado and cadet-age athletes from across the country.

“Fifty percent of the U.S. wrestlers have not competed overseas before. What a great way to start their international careers,” U.S. head coach Rob Hermann said.
