Former Tech hockey player, coach Weller dies at 86

HOUGHTON — Former Michigan Tech hockey player Glen Weller died on May 31 at age 86.
After letting with the Huskies in 1958 and 1959, he had more extensive involvement with the program, working as a radio broadcaster for the MTU team and with the Michigan Tech Fund from 1968-73.
He became a Huskies’ hockey assistant coach in 1973, helping them make three appearances in the NCAA championship game over his five years in that position.
Later he had stints as head coach at Western Michigan University and a scout for the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens.
Weller was also a member of the Michigan Tech Hockey Advisory Council and had a stint on the Huskies Club board of directors.
And he was actually twice inducted into the Michigan Tech Sports Hall of Fame, first as an individual in 2005 and again as a member of the 1975 NCAA national championship team in 2016.
Following a private internment in Houghton on Oct. 4, friends are invited to join the family at the Ambassador Restaurant in Houghton at 1 p.m. for lunch.
He was born on Oct. 14, 1938, in Milden, Saskatchewan, a small farming town in the Canadian prairie.
