Sentinels split at Negaunee Invite baseball

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School baseball team warmed up with a slugfest against Escanaba, then split a pair of games at the Negaunee Invitational a few days later.

The Sentinels lost 20-10 at Escanaba on Wednesday, then opened with a 3-1 victory over Calumet in a semifinal game of the Negaunee Invite on Saturday.

Later Saturday afternoon, Marquette lost to Houghton 10-0 in the Negaunee Invite championship game.

With the MSHS athletics website, marquetteathletics.com, indicating the Sentinels’ record is now 7-5, Marquette had a pair of home games listed this week — one against Menominee that was set for Monday afternoon and another at 6 p.m. Thursday against Gladstone.

Here are details from the Sentinels’ recent games:

Escanaba 20, Marquette 10

On Wednesday at Escanaba, a scoreless first inning didn’t set any kind of theme as Esky would run out to a 9-0 lead only to see Marquette pull within 9-6 in the middle of the fifth before the Eskymos would plate another 11 runs in their final two at-bats as the game ended after six innings.

The Sentinels sent four pitchers to the mound as Alex Brennan started and took the loss. He lasted 2 2/3 innings, allowing nine runs — but only two that were earned as MSHS committed eight errors — on seven hits and four walks as he struck out five.

Jake Toyras went the next 2 1/3 innings, allowing four runs, all unearned, on two hits and three walks as he fanned one. Gib Jezewski was next, getting two outs and giving up seven earned runs on two hits and five walks. Finally, Ian Sheltrow was the last pitcher as he didn’t record an out but also wasn’t charged with a run as he gave up two hits.

While both teams collected 13 hits — and the Sentinels had four times as many extra-base hits — the eight errors along with 12 walks seemed to make the difference in the game’s outcome.

Easton Jezewski led Marquette batters, going 4 for 4 with a pair of doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored. Gib Jezewski was 3 for 4 with a double, an RBI and three runs, while Wes Robinson was 2 for 5 with a run.

Toyras was only 1 for 3, but he scored three times as he drew a walk.

Escanaba’s Ashton Rymkos got the pitching victory, going the first four innings and allowing five runs — four earned — on six hits and three walks as he K’d five. Reliever Bryce Bichler went the final two innings, also giving up four earned and one unearned run on seven hits and two walks with one strikeout.

Bichler also led Esky batters, going 4 for 6 with his team’s only extra-base hit, a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Rymkos was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs, while Mikaiden Hughes and Brian Boutilier each had two hits as Boutilier also had three RBIs and scored three runs.

Marquette 3, Calumet 1

On Saturday in their Negaunee Invite opener, the Sentinels broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the bottom of the third, then held the Copper Kings scoreless the rest of the way.

Brennan, a lefthander, found his pitching mojo on this day, going all six innings while allowing just one earned run on six hits, all singles, as he didn’t walk anyone, hit one batter and fanned 12.

Berg Darin was the hard-luck loser for Calumet, going all five innings as he gave up three runs, though just one earned, on five hits and no walks as he fanned seven.

There was just one error committed by each team with no walks issued, no extra-base hits and one hit batsman.

Robinson and Gib Jezewski each went 2 of 3 for Marquette, Jezewski knocking in three runs and stealing three bases, while Robinson scored twice and made two steals. Sheltrow had Marquette’s other hit.

Gib Jezewski collected an RBI single in the opening inning to get the Sentinels an early lead, but the Copper Kings tied it when Tyler Halonen singled down the right field line.

In the bottom of the third, Gib Jezewski hit another single for two crucial RBIs.

Houghton 10, Marquette 0

On Saturday in the Negaunee Invite championship game, the Sentinels could only manage a single by Toyras against Gremlins pitcher Eli Heathman, who pitched all four innings and also didn’t issue a walk while fanning four.

Gleason was the first of three Marquette pitchers, going three innings and allowing six runs — five earned — on five hits and two walks as he had one strikeout.

Sheltrow went next, pitching two-thirds of an inning and giving up four earned runs on just one hit as he walked three. Toyras was the final pitcher, not getting an out but not being charged with a run as he allowed one hit.
