MOUNT PLEASANT — Emily Paupore of Negaunee was named the Female Athlete of the Year at Central Michigan University during Monday’s end-of-the-year awards ceremony on campus.

A junior on the Chippewas’ cross country and women’s track and field teams, the 2020 Negaunee High School graduate joined CMU wrestler Alex Cramer, who was named the Male Athlete of the Year, as the top honorees among more than 400 student-athletes at the Maroon & Gold Gala held at McGuirk Arena.

Paupore’s mother, Vickie Paupore,

mentioned that her daughter also was named in CMU athletics’ Moment of the Year award for being the first runner in school history to win the Mid-American Conference women’s championship in cross country.

Among her honors was being named First Team All-MAC during the indoor track season over the winter after winning the 5,000-meter title at the conference championships on Feb. 23 in a conference season-best 16 minutes, 16.81 seconds. She was also sixth in the 3,000.

Also during the indoor track season, she set CMU records in the mile, 3,000 and as part of the distance medley relay. The outdoor track team that Emily Paupore is also a member of started its season in late March.

In cross country last fall, Paupore finished in 20th place among 231 runners in 20:57.6 over six kilometers at the NCAA Division I Great Lakes Regional Championships in Madison, Wisconsin, CMU’s best placing since 2014 in the lead-up to the national finals.

She had already won the MAC meet previous to that along with setting Central’s 5K record.

After the season was over, she was named All-Academic by the U.S. Track and Field-Cross Country Coaches Association, sporting a 3.95 cumulative grade-point average in elementary education.
