Superiorland Baseball begins its 7th season

MARQUETTE — The Superiorland Baseball League is an adult hardball league now in its seventh season.

This year there are four central Upper Peninsula teams. The winner of this league and the winner of the Copper Country based Twilight League face off annually for the U.P. Championship in September.

This year’s 2023 Superiorland teams: Marquette County Mavericks; Escanaba-based Mikey D’s Beer Cave; Channing Railroaders; and Hubbards Marsh The Band (consisting of Marquette County players).

In opening night action on Monday:

Channing Railroaders win 6-3 over Mikey D’s Beer Cave in Channing. Channing avenged its 2022 championship game loss to the Escanaba-based squad. No other details are available.

The Marquette County Mavericks prevailed 11-10 over Hubbards Marsh The Band at Negaunee’s Irontown Field. Mav’s starter Doug Turnbull went three innings followed by Jacob Adriano for another three who eventually was credited with the mound victory. Parker Maki came in the seventh and final inning for the save after preserving a one-run lead and stranding the tying run at third.

Erik Johnson led the charge for Hubbards with three doubles and three runs scored. Pitchers Ryan Hanson and Riley Lynch chipped in two hits apiece as well.

Jake Spear led a balanced Mavericks attack with three hits and a run scored.

On Monday, June 19, the Mavericks travel to Channing to take on the Railroaders at 7 p.m. and Mikey D’s face off against Hubbards 6:45 p.m. in Gwinn at the Forsyth Township Ball Field.
