Distracted driver causes road closure

MARQUETTE — A one-vehicle crash caused a temporary closure of Wright Street near Commerce Drive on Saturday, the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Around 2 p.m., dispatch received a call that a 2017 Chrysler van heading south on Wright Street had gone off the road and into the treeline.

The driver was an 82-year-old man from downstate Jenison with three passengers. Distracted by his phone, the driver failed to see a curve in the road, causing the van to go off the right side of the road, down an embankment.

Though the van didn’t hit any large trees, it did hit a number of small ones. The only injury reported was a sore neck from one of the passengers.

Assisting at the scene was Marquette Township Fire/Rescue and Marquette Detailing. Wright Street was closed for a short time while the vehicle was removed from the ditch.
