Blues ride wave of runs past Menominee

MARQUETTE — One day after having to rally to get a Legion baseball victory, Marquette used a massive second inning wave of runs to overwhelm Menominee Thursday.

The Blues plated 11 runs in the second inning and kept the onslaught going from there as they took down the Red Wave 19-3 in five innings. Marquette was also helped out by seven Menominee errors.

Starter Kyle Frusti got the win on the mound for Marquette as he gave up one hit and one walk with four strikeouts in two innings of work. Zach Starzynski took the loss for Menominee.

The 11-run explosion was highlighted by a 2-run double by Erik Johnson that pushed Marquette’s lead to 6-0. Later in the same inning, Parker Maki hit an RBI triple to make the score 10-0 Blues.

Down 11-0, Menominee got one run back in the top of the third on a RBI single by Starzynski, but Marquette went back up by 11 runs in its half of the frame on a RBI single by Hogan Nemetz.

The Blues then put the game away in the fourth with a 7-run surge. Nemetz had the big hit of the inning as he drove in two runs with a double to right field.

Marquette heads to Sault Ste. Marie to face the Eastern U.P. Wood Ducks this afternoon.
