Negaunee tennis wins again
ISHPEMING — The visiting Negaunee Miners boys tennis team swept the host Ishpeming Hematites, 8-0, Wednesday.
“Mick (Kumpula) had a nice day and his feet are really improving,” NHS Coach Kyle Saari said. “He’s a tall, athletic kid who is still young, and each match he plays he figures things out a little more. We like him a lot at 4 singles.”
Kumpula beat Levi Giroux 6-1, 6-0. Other Negaunee singles players earning victories were Will Luke, Luke Syrjala and Corbin Marshall.
As for his doubles teams, Saari said: “Jace (Turri) and Zack (Brundage) continue to complement each other well in doubles, and it’s exciting to see a lot of our young players continue to grow.”
Turri and Brundage, the No. 2 doubles duo, triumphed over Logan Hurkmans and Ben Rubick 6-2, 6-2.
The Miners other doubles teams scoring victories were Nick Jacobetti and Gavin Saunders, Gavin Jacobson and James Thomson and Nathan Marcotte and James Dank.
