HOUGHTON — A Negaunee High School graduate was an award winner when the Michigan Tech football team held its annual postseason meeting last week in Houghton.

Senior Jeremy Bell was named the Offensive Lineman of the Year while also receiving the Ted Kearly Award for the second straight season. The Kearly honor goes to a player who exhibits passion, pride and integrity on and off the field, according to a news release from MTU Sports Information.

Bell anchored a front line that helped put up impressive offensive numbers during the season, averaging 19.0 points and 357.7 yards per game, including 140.9 yards rushing and 216.8 yards passing.

Bell played in 37 Huskies’ games and was an All-GLIAC Second Team selection in 2017 as well as Tech’s Offensive Lineman of the Year that season.

This season, he received All-GLIAC honorable mention along with being a four-time GLIAC All-Academic Team member.

Tech finished the season 5-5, good for fifth in the GLIAC, and claimed the Miner’s Cup for the 10th straight season with a 24-20 win over Northern Michigan University on Oct. 12 at Sherman Field at Kearly Stadium in Houghton.

The Huskies’ headline honoree was senior wide receiver Jacob Wenzlick of Sanford, who was named the Alan Bovard Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive season and was also chose as Offensive Back of the Year and received the Harold Meese Sportsmanship Award.

Junior defensive lineman Nate LaJoie of Sault Ste. Marie was chosen to receive the Fred Baird Memorial Outstanding Defensive Player as well as the Defensive Lineman of the Year and Iron Man Award. He was an All-GLIAC First Team pick.

Senior Travis Tidwell of Detroit received the Defensive Back of the Year award and was an All-GLIAC Second Team pick this year.

Senior Glacier Wallington of Metamora is the Daniel Dopp Memorial Special Team Award recipient.

Junior quarterback and punter Will Ark of Green Bay, Wisconsin, was the Outstanding Offensive Player of the Year and made the All-GLIAC Second Team.

Senior linebacker Marshael Ryan of Linden received the Omer LaJeunesse Award for Scholastic Achievement. Along with being an outstanding football player, Ryan graduated with a biomedical engineering degree and is now pursuing a master’s degree in business administration at MTU.

Defensive lineman Samuel Kinne of Metamora was named Freshman of the Year, wide receiver Darius Willis of Warren the Offensive Scout Player of the Year and Dante Cardinali of Southlake, Texas, was Defensive Scout Player of the Year.
