Ackerman sisters help Bay College women’s basketball team sweep weekend

ESCANABA — The Ackerman twin sisters from Munising came off the bench and combined to score 11 points in Bay College’s 76-49 victory over Alpena Community College in women’s basketball action on Saturday.

The game was part of the opening round of Bay’s Quality Inn & Suites Holiday Classic.

Kelsea Ackerman scored eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, while Marissa Ackerman added three points. Kelsea also had two setals, while Marissa had an assist and a steal.

On Sunday in the Holiday Classic final, each of the Ackermans scored three points in a 75-40 win by Bay College (11-5) over the Milwaukee Area Technical College.

Each got their points on a 3-pointer, while Marissa also had five rebounds and three assists, while Kelsea had two steals.

All 13 players on the Norse women’s roster this winter are graduates of Upper Peninsula high schools.

In the men’s tournament, Bay defeated Alpena 116-76 on Saturday before falling to MATC 108-74 on Sunday to move its record to 11-6.

Against Alpena, Luke Mattson of Negaunee and Darien Nichols of Manistique each scored five points, while Dondre Yohe of Ishpeming and Cade Contreras of Munising had three apiece.

Contreras also contributed six assists and two steals, while Yohe had four rebounds, three on offense. Nichols had two rebounds and Mattson a rebound and an assist.

Against the Milwaukee school, Contreras scored six points in just 11 minutes.
