Red, White and Blue winners: Westwood High School alumni softball tournament crowns trio of champions on Fourth of July

ISHPEMING — The eights weren’t really wild but they did come up champions at the annual Westwood High School alumni softball tournament held at Sunnyside Field in Ishpeming Township on Tuesday.

That’s because the Fourth of July champions came from the “8” classes of 2008, 1998 and 1988.

In the Blue Division, 2008 doubled up 2012, 14-7, in the finals as Chris Steele led the way with three triples among his four hits while teammate Brandon Frisk also had four hits.

Tanner Truscott beat out three hits for 2012.

In the White Division, 1998 outsocred 2003, 26-6, with Tim Palomaki and Jeremy Steele each collecting four hits, Palomaki getting two triples and Steele a home run.

Ryan Reichel had two hits for 2003.

And in the Red Division, 1998 pounded out a 16-6 victory over 1981-82-83 as Jeff Wood had a homer and two doubles among four hits, Steve Moyle had three doubles in his four hits and Dan Carlson added three hits.

For 81-82-83, Don Lahanen had two hits.

On Monday, 1998 reached the White finals with a 17-4 win over 1992 as the winners’ Shane Nault had four hits and Palomaki and Terry Campbell each collected three hits.

Scott Blixt had two hits for ’92.

Also Monday, 2003 made the White finals with an 11-5 win over 1996-97, led by Tony Pope and Josh Makela each getting three hits.

For 96-97, Travis Hongisto had two hits.
