Marquette Senior High School girls win cross country skiing state title

TRAVERSE CITY — The Marquette Senior High School girls cross country ski team won the Michigan High School state championship at the VASA Trails last weekend.

Freshman Ericka Asmus led the Redettes with an overall runner-up finish. Senior teammate Bethany Wright was fifth, junior Isabel Carr seventh, sophomore Grace Argeropoulos 15th, sophomore Emma Stahl 18th and senior Brianna Argeroupolos 21st.

Already leading after the five-kilometer race during Day 1 of the two-day pursuit, Marquette added to its lead on Saturday with Asmus third, Wright fourth and Carr fifth in the 5K freestyle. Then in the afternoon freestyle sprints, the trio put together finishes all in the top seven to lock up their title.

“This is a great team win for these girls, especially for Bethany,” MSHS head coach Joey Graci said. “She has raced her tail off for many years on this team, and it’s awesome she is going out on top.”

On the boys side, Marquette couldn’t catch the Copper Country team, placing third overall. Sophomore Nate Garwood paced the Redmen with a seventh-place finish. Sophomores Aleut Hatfield was 11th, Julien Malherbe 12th and Mathurin Gagnon 13th, while senior Ethan Hall was 17th. In addition, freshman Eli Wiitala was 18th, Moses Waite 19th and Evan Ampe 29th.

“The boys battled hard and had some great finishes,” Marquette coach Steve Carr said. “We are a really young team this year, so we are looking for some great results in the next few years. Having four sophomores and three freshman in the top 30 is really promising for the future.”

In the overall combined girls-and-boys team division, Marquette tied for second with Traverse City.
