Mountaineers jump all over Emeralds early for big football win

IRON MOUNTAIN – A 35-point first quarter by Iron Mountain sealed the game against Manistique in a 61-0 prep football win on Friday in a Mid-Peninsula Conference game.

The Mountaineers faced a unique offense in the Emeralds’ spread system.

Iron Mountain (4-2, 3-2 M-PC) shut it down, surrendering just 19 yards rushing and 33 total yards for the game.

“We came out and did what we needed to do early – get on the scoreboard,” Iron Mountain coach Robin Marttila said. “We stopped their passing game early and we sort of rolled from there on both sides of the ball.”

The Mountaineers gained 310 yards – including 232 rushing – and posted 11 first downs.

“I was happy with the way we spread the ball around,” Marttila said. “We had a lot of guys score touchdowns and make plays. That’s what we needed to do.”

The Emeralds (0-6, 0-5 MPC) were overmatched by a more physical team, Manistique coach Dennis Beaman said.

“They’re bigger, faster, stronger. We just couldn’t match up at all,” Beaman said. “They stifled our offense for the most part.

“There wasn’t a whole lot that we could take away from this ballgame. Every team we play just seems like a playoff-caliber team.”

Iron Mountain’s backups got significant playing time, even with a running clock that began with about 9 1/2 minutes remaining in the first half.

“Our coaching staff is proud of all these kids and how hard they’ve worked this year,” Marttila said. “I was happy everyone got to play, and everyone contributed, so it was a good team win.”

Mountaineers quarterback Aaron Bolo threw 2 for 2 for 34 yards and a touchdown. Jacob Mongrain also threw 2 for 2 for 44 yards and a touchdown.

Ryan Michaud and Jordan Wadge each caught two passes, including one for a touchdown.

Gavin Wright led the Mountaineers’ rushing attack with two touchdowns and 63 yards rushing on seven carries.

Josh Tucker rushed three times for 55 yards and a touchdown.

Tucker’s score was the first for the Mountaineers with 8:01 remaining in the first quarter. Tucker took a 3rd-and-3 handoff for a 36-yard score.

Parker Swartout rushed six times for 44 yards and a touchdown.

Justin Rock also scored a touchdown. Rock ran four carries for 22 yards.

Jacob Lefebvre scored a touchdown on a 5-yard run. He finished the game with 42 yards on three carries.

Seventeen different Mountaineers recorded a tackle. Kyle Johnson scored a pick-six in the first quarter.

Wright also had an interception, six tackles and a fumble recovery.

The Mountaineers kept Manistique quarterback Nolan Armock at bay with four sacks, by Rock, Lefebvre, Trent Juul and Josh Pilot.

Wadge led the Mountaineers’ defense with seven tackles.
