MARQUETTE — A trio of Northern Michigan University golfers from the men’s and women’s teams have earned All-GLIAC honors following the recent end to the spring season.

They are junior Maya Hunter on the GLIAC women’s First Team, senior Russel Sprecher on the GLIAC men’s Second Team and senior Alyssa Yaggie on GLIAC women’s Honorable Mention.

“It was a great year for many of our team members,” NMU men’s and women’s teams head coach Eric Johnson said. “These awards are the result of lots of hard work and are more than well deserved.”

Hunter, who competed at the NCAA East Region Championships in Carmel, Indiana, a week ago, missed qualifying for the NCAA Division II Championships by just four strokes as an individual golfer not affiliated with a qualifying team. The regional tournament was a three-round, 54-hole event.

This is her first All-GLIAC honor. Hunter earned her first career win at the Lewis Spring Invitational, was named conference Golfer of the Week on March 27 for her runner-up finish at The Klash in Kentucky, tied for sixth place at the GLIAC Championships and finished in the top 10 in all five of her spring meets.

Sprecher won an individual title twice during the school year, the first coming at the Davenport Panther Invitational when he guided NMU to its first GLIAC tournament win since 2015 while taking home GLIAC Golfer of the Week honors. His second-round 62 that included seven birdies and an eagle is the best 18-hole score in NMU history, while his two-day total of 137 matched a program-best he set the prior year.

He claimed his second individual gold at The Klash in Kentucky in the spring while finishing tied for 17th at the GLIAC Championships.

Yaggie led the Wildcats to a runner-up finish at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate meet earlier this year, shooting rounds of 73 and 74 to finish second individually, and her two-round total of 147 is the best of her career and good for a tie for fifth in NMU women’s golf history.
