MARQUETTE — With Ishpeming the only girls basketball team, no matter what size, to grab two spots on the All-Upper Peninsula Dream Team, other area schools had a chance to land spots on the All-U.P. Division 4 First Team and Second Team honor squads.

Nevertheless, the Hematites did have one honoree in D-4 as Munising grabbed two spots and Baraga and Newberry one apiece for five total from the area.

These honors were handed out at the annual basketball meeting held by the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association on Monday at Northern Michigan University in Marquette.

The lone First Team representative from the area is Munising 5-foot-7 senior guard Emersyn Crisp. She also made the Skyline Central Conference First Team, its top honor grouping, as she averaged 21.1 points and seven rebounds a game for the 21-5 Mustangs.

Munising reached the MHSAA Division 4 regional tournament championship game before bowing out to St. Ignace 54-33 on March 13. Before that, the Mustangs posted postseason wins over Superior Central, Newberry and Brimley.

Among their five losses were games against some of the U.P.’s best and biggest schools — Marquette, Ishpeming and Bark River-Harris, along with the St. Ignace encounter in the regionals.

Junior teammate Bailey Corcoran, a 5-10 forward, was among four area Second Team honorees. Corcoran also made the Skyline Central First Team and only played in 18 games due to an early-season ankle sprain, MHS head coach Matt Mattson pointed out.

Nevertheless, she posted averages of 15 points and seven rebounds per game.

Representing Ishpeming on the Second Team is 6-2 sophomore forward Mya Hemmer, who earned West PAC First Team and Mid-Peninsula Conference Second Team honors, also making the Defensive Team in both leagues.

This up-and-coming player averaged 9.8 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.1 steals and 1.5 blocked shots a contest, making 46.9% from the floor.

Baraga 5-7 senior Makenna Hendrickson also made the Second Team after she lost a runoff vote to make the First Team. An honorable mention in Associated Press Division 4 all-state, she scored 14 points per game, adding 4.7 rebounds, 4.1 steals and three assists each night for the 19-5 Vikings.

Two of Baraga’s losses were at the hands of Ishpeming, one in their district tourney final, and another to Negaunee.

Also on the Second Team is 6-1 senior Lucie Rabachova, an exchange student at 12-9 Newberry. She averaged 10.1 points, eight rebounds, 5.2 assists, 4.8 steals and four blocked shots per game.

The Indians won twice in their district tourney before falling 47-40 to Munising in the district championship tilt, and also pulled off a 46-42 upset win over St. Ignace in mid-February.
