MARQUETTE — Three Northern Michigan University men’s basketball players have been honored with Academic All-District honors by the College Sports Communicators organization for combining excellence on the court and also in the classroom.

NMU Sports Information reported on Tuesday that sophomore Max Weisbrod, junior Carson Smith and sophomore Sam Privet received the honor. The CSC recognizes honorees in each of the NCAA’s three divisions along with the NAIA.

The Wildcats’ trio along with other All-District honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot, with First, Second and Third Team Academic All-America awards being announced on April 16 for women’s players and April 17 for men.

All three players had instrumental roles in Northern’s regular-season championship when the Wildcats won a program record-tying 13 consecutive games and finished with an overall record of 22-11 and GLIAC mark of 14-4.

Weisbrod of DeForest, Wisconsin, is a business management major who has a 3.56 grade-point average at NMU.

Earlier this month, he was named GLIAC Player of the Year and also earned GLIAC First Team honors while being named to the GLIAC All-Tournament Team, then earned an All-Midwest Region First Team honor by the Division 2 Conference Commissioners Association and All-Region First Team from the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

Weisbrod started all 30 games he played as point guard for Northern, as he missed three games due to injury late in the regular season as NMU went 1-2 in that stretch. He finished fifth in the conference with 17.2 points per game and second in assists with 4.4 a contest. He also made 39.1% of his 3-point shots (84 of 215) as his made 3s were second in the GLIAC.

He scored in double figures two dozen times, including 12 times reaching 20 points, five times reaching 25 points and hitting 30 points twice, including his career-high 35 points with seven triples in a 98-66 home win over Michigan Tech on Jan. 27.

Weisbrod announced on X (formerly Twitter) last week that he was entering the NCAA transfer portal with the intention of not transferring unless it was to an NCAA Division I school.

Smith, of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, has a 3.52 GPA in financial management.

He started all 33 games this season for NMU, finishing third among Wildcats in both scoring at 12.7 ppg and rebounds at 4.3 a game. He also led Northern with 40 steals, 2.71 assist-to-turnover ratio and his 40.4% accuracy on 3-pointers (shooters with at least 10 attempts), and was second in total 3-pointers with 57.

Smith scored in double figures 23 times, recording a career-high 23 points on 8-of-10 shooting in the home victory over MTU.

Privet, a native of Caledonia, Minn., has a 3.88 GPA in construction management.

Like Smith, he played in all 33 of NMU’s games, and despite making just one start, averaged nearly 15 minutes court time each game.

He averaged 5.8 ppg and 2.9 rebounds while making a team-leading 62.1% from the field (77 of 124). His season-high 11 points he scored three times included road games at Michigan Tech and Concordia-St. Paul and a home game vs. Ripon.
