Negaunee Miners boys tennis team breezes 8-0 past Westwood

NEGAUNEE — There always has to be one outlier, but it didn’t slow down the Negaunee High School boys tennis team from taking an 8-0 victory over visiting Westwood on Monday afternoon.

The Miners (8-0) dominated in seven of the eight matches, losing a total of just five games among them.

But at No. 3 doubles, Negaunee’s Zack Brundage and Brady Johnson had their hands full after an easy first set before pulling off a 6-0, 7-6 (7-1) win over the Patriots’ Jaxson Alderton and Jayce Patron.

“Monday meets can sometimes be unpredictable, especially after a long week, so it’s good to see us respond well,” NHS head coach Kyle Saari said in an email.

“In particular, our singles lineup looked very focused.”

Those wins included a 6-0, 6-0 victory posted by Negaunee’s Tyler Lajimodiere at No. 4 over Westwood’s Cameron Mahaffey.

“Tyler was able to set the tone right away in his match, and he really had some force behind his forehand today,” Saari said.

“Brady Johnson did a great job stepping in at (No.) 3 doubles for us, to partner with Zack. He picked up his first varsity win in the process.”

The Miners had a busy week of dual meets, then went to Kingsford and dominated at the Kingsford Invitational, winning seven of the eight flights and finishing runner-up in the one they didn’t win.
