Northern Michigan University swimmers, divers sweep home meet on Saturday

MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan University easily sweep its third home weekend of the swimming and diving season on Saturday over Wisconsin-Stevens Point at the PEIF pool.

The NMU men’s team won 213-84 while the Wildcat women were also victorious 200-96.

Wins were posted by both Northern teams in the 200-yard medley relay, the women by Faith Sill, Evelyn DeCarlo, Olivia Haerr and Pilar Perello Ferrer and the men by Max Swiatkowski, Roberto Camera, Ben Stolberg and Leo Nolles.

NMU swept the top three places in the 1,000 freestyle, including wins by the men’s Ondrej Zach and women’s Vanessa Steigauf.

First places were accomplished by Perello Ferrer and the men’s Felipe Lemos in the 200 free, while Haerr and Nolles took wins in the 100 backstroke.

Camera won the men’s 100 breaststroke as the women’s Zoe DeKievit and men’s Jasper Pullinen finished first in the 200 butterfly.

William LaCount won the men’s 50 free, while Jenna Joerger led an NMU 2-3-4-5 finish in the women’s version as she was runner-up by two-hundredths of a second to the Pointers’ Joy Vandenberg.

The Northern women’s Abbie Harned and men’s Tobie Stiles each swept their respective one- and three-diving competitions, while teammates Michaela Nelson and LaCount won the 100 free.

In the 200 back, it was Sill for the women and Thibault Auger for the men winning for NMU, while Steigauf and Erikas Kapocius won the 200 breast for the home team.

Zach and Meritxell Font Cantarero took the 500 free by 14 and 12 seconds, respectively, while Joerger and Nolles annexed victories in the 100 fly.

In the 200 individual medley, Steigauf and Daniel Lopez Aponte won, while NMU scored decisive wins in the meets’ final events, the 400 free relay.

The women’s winners were Donna Hannig, Perello Ferrer, Joerger and Nelson, while the men’s were LaCount, Kapocius, Dean Ramsbottom and Nolles.

The Wildcats swimmers and divers hit the road to swim and dive at Wisconsin-Green Bay on Friday before returning home for the next event, a meet against the Michigan Tech club team that is combined with the Wildcat Skins intrasquad meet. That will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, at the PEIF pool.
