ISHPEMING — Westwood led the way with Munising and Iron Mountain not far behind for receiving the most honors when the All-Upper Peninsula Division 2 boys tennis awards were announced earlier this week.

That shouldn’t be too surprising as those three teams — the champion Patriots, runner-up Mustangs and third-place Mountaineers — filled all the championship match spots at the U.P. D-2 finals just over a week ago.

Ishpeming also earned a pair of honors and Gwinn had one.

Among the “special” awards, Westwood’s Sarah Massie earned the Coach of the Year award, while IM’s David Juul claimed the other two — Player of the Year and All-State Division 2, the only player from U.P. Division 2 to gain that latter honor.

Juul, not coincidentally, won the championship at No. 1 singles in the finals.

Westwood also had a pair of honorees in both singles and doubles for Division 2 All-U.P.

In singles, the Pats’ Andrew Niemi, the No. 1 runner-up, made First Team, while teammate Bryce Markham, runner-up at No. 2, was honorable mention.

Then in doubles, WHS’ Ryan LaFountain and Chase Prophet, the runners-up at No. 1, made First Team, while teammates Gabe Tossava and Zak Senske, runners-up at No. 2, were honorable mention.

Westwood used its depth to capture the U.P. team championship as all of its Nos. 3 and 4 flights became champions. That included Patrick Klumpp and Mason Hietikko in singles and the duos of John Thomsen and Nick Salzwedel, along with Jayce Patron and Mitchell Ford, in doubles.

From Munising, U.P. Finals champions at No. 1 doubles Alex Vandzandt and Lucas Westcomb earned All-U.P. First Team.

Honorable mentions went to the Mustangs’ Taylor Borowski in singles and teammates Jesse Duran and Carson Kienitz in doubles.

IM’s Juul and Brenden LaPoint, the No. 2 singles champion, earned All-U.P. First Team in singles, while doubles honorable mention went to the Mountaineers’ Kurt Ryan and Gerald Sampoll-Torres.

Ishpeming’s Hayden Hares and Hunter Smith earned All-U.P. First Team honors in doubles, while the Hematites’ Landen Kiviniemi won honorable mention in singles.

And Gwinn’s John Deatrick, the Modeltowners’ No. 1 singles player who earned their point in the finals, earned All-U.P. First Team.

West Iron County, which was fourth at the D-2 finals, had a pair of honorees. Matthew Dutcher earned a First Team award in singles, while the Wykons’ Sam Holroyd and Colton Holm won honorable mention in doubles.
