Northern Michigan University’s Heidi Billings, Ondrej Zach earn GLIAC weekly awards in swimming, diving

MARQUETTE — A pair of Northern Michigan University swimmers repeated winning GLIAC weekly honors after the Wildcats’ performance at the Calvin College Invitational from Dec. 2-4.

Freshman Heidi Billings won the Women’s Swimmer of the Week for the fourth time this season, while junior Ondrej Zach took the Men’s Swimmer of the Week crown for the second time.

Billings led the No. 9 NMU women with three individual and a relay win as NMU won the team title, sweeping all three days of competition.

She won the 200-yard backstroke in 1 minute, 58.64 seconds, 100 back in 55.54 and 200 individual medley in 2:03.41, and was on the winning 200 medley relay that clocked 1:43.22.

Zach, a Czech Republic National Team member from Rudolfov, Czech Republic, set men’s pool records in the 100 and 1,650 freestyle races, the latter in 15:12.42, continuing his domination of long-distance races. He was also third in the 500 free in 4:30.30 against eight other schools.

Overall, the Northern men finished runner-up with 1,585.5 points.

The NMU swimming and diving teams are off until after the holidays with a meet at the Orange Bowl Classic in Key Largo, Fla., on Jan. 3.
