CARMEL, Ind. — Northern Michigan University women’s golfer Maya Hunter fired another solid round to finish her time at the NCAA Division II East Regional on Wednesday, moving up four spots after registering a 4-over-par 76 in her third and final round.

She missed making the NCAA Championships by four strokes among golfers who could advance as individuals.

Hunter rounded out her tournament with an overall score of 17-over after rounds of 83, 74 and 76 for a total of 233, where she finished fourth among individuals — those not from teams that were invited to compete.

With her finishing in a tie for 19th in a field of 81 golfers, her three-day total moves her into fifth all-time in NMU program history.

The top two individuals — again, those not on teams advancing — go on to NCAA Tournament nationals. They are Brook Herbstreit of Saginaw Valley State, who was at 11-over and tied for eighth overall, and Lisa Marie Schumacher of Tiffin, who came in at plus-13 and in 10th place.

Hunter led the field in par-5 scoring, averaging 4.67 per hole, or a total of 4-under-par, as well as leading the field in birdies with 13, two more than the next closest.

The course once again played a touch easier than the previous day, with the average score being 79.86 on Wednesday.

Hunter’s Wednesday round started off on the back nine with a bogey on No. 10 before she recorded four straight pars, then bogeyed three of the final four holes to make the turn at a plus-4 40. She registered a par on the par-4 14th, the hardest hole of the day and second hardest hole over three rounds. Hole 14 gave up only two birdies and 83 pars over three days, both lowest of any holes.

For the second straight day, Hunter was able to score on the front nine, firing home five birdies in six holes along with two pars en route to an even-par 36.
